A NEW science centre opened at Abingdon School last week as boys, parents, staff, governors and guests gathered to celebrate.

The £14m Yang Science Centre houses 21 teaching laboratories, study areas, project rooms and preparatory rooms.

Sir David Weatherall, a molecular geneticist and professor of medicine who opened the building, recommended a novel approach to studying science.

He told students: “Do not believe a word that teachers tell you, but stand everything on its head.”

The new building brings a touch of modernity to the school’s science facilities, some of which date back to 1949.

Pupil Saul Rea, 14, said: “It is so much more modern than the old science blocks. I can’t wait for my first lesson in there.”
