A robber jumped over the counter at a Witney bookmakers before taking cash.
Thames Valley Police said officers were called to Stan James bookmakers, in Corn Street at about 6.55pm on Saturday following reports that a man had jumped over the counter, stolen money and then left.
The man is described as short, black and was wearing a beanie-style hat, a blue top, black trousers and black shoes.
He was with two other men and the three of them are believed to have been drinking in various town centre pubs and visited another betting shop during the evening.
Investigating officer, Det Insp Steve Raffield from Force CID in Banbury, said: "I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have any information about it to contact police.
"This was a frightening experience for the member of staff and Thames Valley Police investigates incidents of this kind thoroughly."
Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
