KEEN sewer and knitter Harriet Day is making it her mission to bring sewing back into the spotlight after discovering her town did not have a suitable sewing club.

The 22-year-old, who lives in Madley Park, Witney, has recently graduated from Hertfordshire University with a degree in business.

And she has put her new-found skills, combined with her passion for sewing, to the test by launching Sew Local, a new sewing school.

Miss Day said: “I started off as a Saturday girl as the Witney Sewing Centre when I was 15. My mum was always sewing when I was younger."

She added that when she came back from university she'd thought about what she wanted to do. Miss Day added that she could find no sewing classes in the area and people were saying they wanted one.

Despite starting just a few months ago, Miss Day’s classes are already being booked well into next year.

She offers classes for all ages and abilities, as well as special after-school clubs for children, costing £15.

Adults can also come along to classes on Sunday, which run from 10am to 4pm and cost about £40.

Email witney-sewandknit-classes@hotmail.com to book a class. The class is part of Witney Sewing Centre in High Street.

Other classes are available in the area, including one at Madley Park Hall held on Monday evenings from 6.30 to 9pm.
