FANCY a pint with his Lordship?

A cottage that doubles as Downton Abbey’s Grantham Arms has gone on the market at £450,000.

The double-fronted house in Bampton was used as a backdrop to scenes featuring stars from the popular ITV series, including Dan Stevens who played Matthew Crawley and Jim Carter aka butler Carson.

The film crew repainted the door of Mayville, to make it look more like a pub.

They also covered up signs of modern-day life and set up a beer barrel and chairs outside

Although it was only the outside of the property which made it on to our screens, actors were filmed opening the front door, as if to go in.

The owners of the three-bedroom cottage, which is opposite the village church where Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley’s wedding was filmed, still have the Grantham Arms pub sign made for the first series.

Marc Hatcher, of Witney-based agents Scottfraser, said: "The owners of Mayville tell me they had Dan Stevens and Jim Carter practising coming in and out of the ‘pub’.

"Tom the chauffeur, otherwise known as The Imitation Game actor Allen Leech, also filmed there during a plot line which saw him staying the night at the Grantham Arms, before going off to marry Lady Sybil, played by Jessica Brown Findlay.

Mr Hatcher added: "The family’s cat, Archie was also caught on camera, after he ran out in front of Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton's carriage.

"We think the house was chosen to be on TV because it is one of the few period homes in the village which has a double frontage that could be made to look like an old-style inn.

"It’s really fascinating to think this Bampton cottage is part of the Downton Abbey phenomenon."
