FIREFIGHTERS want to honour their men and women past, present and future with a roll of honour.

The crew at Eynsham Fire Station are appealing to residents to help them piece together its history in a bid to have every firefighter's name engraved on the building.

Firefighter Stuart Smith, who is leading the campaign, said: "It would be great if we could remember everybody that has served here and a roll of honour around the station, with everyone's names on would be a fitting tribute.

"We are at the early stages of trying to gather information about past crews.

"What we are hoping to create is a display on the wall outside the station that would go around the building and it would be great if we could get a local historian on board to help us."

Mr Smith said the team believes that the station was first established in the 1930s but they are currently to pin down an exact date.

In recent years crews from the station attended the Randolph Hotel fire in 2015 and the arson attack on South Oxfordshire District Council's offices in Crowmarsh Gifford in January of the same year.

More recently they were one of the first on scene after half of the boiler house at Didcot Power Station collapsed in February.

Mr Smith added: "The roll of honour would not be just for the past crews, it would be for those serving now who will retire, and then of course future crews.

"It is very important that we do something to remember everyone.

"It would be lovely for us, when we do retire, to be able to show our children and grandchildren that we were part of this station's history.

"We just do not want to forget anybody."

Fires are not the only problems crew members are adept at handling.

The team has already raised thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK, Helen and Douglas House hospice and the Firefighters Charity.

Having completed a Tough Mudder Challenge – a 12 mile extreme obstacle course – in August they are now preparing themselves for another challenge.

Mr Smith said: "We are going to be doing another Tough Mudder next year in May in Henley-on-Thames.

"It must be said that most of us agreed to this before seeing the obstacles but it's too late to turn back now.

"Some of us are approaching 50, for a couple it has already passed them by, and we are in no doubt this will be a challenge.

"We would be really grateful if people could show us their support."
