Builder lands £3k fine for fly-tipping

A SELF-EMPLOYED builder has been handed a £3,000 fine for fly-tipping.

Marcus Shirley, 44, of Bryony Gardens in Carterton, dumped building waste and bathroom fittings in White Hill Quarry, near Burford, in September 2011.

West Oxfordshire District Council environmental enforcement officers traced the rubbish to an address in Richmond-on-Thames, where Shirley was working.

Shirley admitted fly- tipping, carrying waste without authority and failure to produce waste transfer notes.

Banbury magistrates fined him £3,000, with £871 costs and a £15 victim’s surcharge, on Friday.

£3,886 for dumping a bit of rubbish. £250 for driving drunk (although you could kill some innocent person) £100 for kicking seven bells out of some poor soul on a friday night in Park End St. And a slap on the wrist for nicking the possessions of a hard working family. It is nice to see that the courts have got their priorities right.

Mate, the reason the builder is fined such a lot is because he has the money. The law today, introduced under the previous regime, is for profit, not about justice. I'm about to refuse to pay a £60 speeding fine for driving 40 in a 30mph area (accidentally) where I have safely driven for over 25 years. The letter accompanying my speeding fine was very very threatening, despite the lack of severity of the offense. Yet theft and other crimes go on in Oxford daily and as you say, the punishment is minor, because the thieves don't have money. We live in dark times.

I had one of those just after they reduced the speed limit past the Golf Club from 50 to 30 about 10+ years ago. I ended up fighting like you and got £185 and 4 points. Unfortunately the courts like all parts of our lives nowadays, has turned into a business. Good luck with the speeding fine.

If you do kill someone drink driving though, the fine is the least of your worries. Same with the assault/GBH charges that the second offence you mentioned would bring.

We've all seen the advert in which the little girl is killed at 40mph but lives at 30. Just pay your fine and stop bleating. I have no sympathy for speeders and you're deluded if you think it's a minor crime. Tell it to the parents of a dead child.
