Debutant Lewis Montrose, flanked by midfielder partner Peter Leven, is booked after an early clash with Bradford’s Nathan Doyle
PETER Leven compared Lewis Montrose to an Arnold Schwarzenegger character following a hugely impressive Oxford United debut, writes DAVID PRITCHARD.
The on-loan Gillingham midfielder was cup-tied for the previous two U’s games, but made up for lost time on Saturday by starring in United’s 2-1 win at Bradford City.
Montrose added steel alongside Leven in the middle of the park and used the ball well.
He almost crowned the display with a stunning goal in the first half, but after a mazy dribble his shot was blocked.
Leven was thrilled to see his midfield partner perform so well, in a display which reminded him of Schwarzenegger’s most famous role.
He said: “He was like the Terminator at times, chasing everybody down.
“He’s a good player. I’ve come up against him before and he’s a good kid as well, so it’s good for the squad.”
Leven continued his rich vein of form in front of goal by converting a last-gasp penalty, which sealed the result.
He slammed home his sixth goal of the season, four of which have come from the penalty spot.
The 29-year-old insisted having a spot-kick so late in the game did not increase the pressure.
He said: “You don’t even think about it, I didn’t know how long was left.
“A penalty is a penalty, whether it’s in the first minute or the last, but I put myself forward to take it and I scored again.
“I think it was our best away performance of the season. We were different class in the way we passed the ball and worked for each other.”
