CONFIDENCE among the Oxford United squad hit rock bottom when they lost at Rotherham United in September, but Jake Wright says it will be completely different for the return clash tomorrow.

The U’s played well for much of the game at the New York Stadium, but came away with nothing.

A 3-1 defeat was the side’s sixth in a row in npower League Two during a month to forget.

But since then Chris Wilder’s side have patiently rebuilt their campaign and head into this weekend’s meeting as the division’s form side.

They are eight league games unbeaten and attempting to win a fifth successive league game and Wright thinks the contrast shows just how far they have come.

The United skipper said: “At that period of the season we were really struggling and I think that’s the way things were going.

“We were playing well, but not getting the results.

“Confidence was really, really low, so we’re playing them at a different time of the year now.

“We’re full of confidence and things aren’t going 100 per cent right there for them.

“It’s a good time to play them and hopefully we’ll get three points.”

After rediscovering their form, United have hauled themselves to the fringes of the play-off picture with 20 games remaining.

The key for Wright is to keep the standards high, but the centre back believes the gloomy period earlier in the season will prevent them from getting carried away.

“It’s about being consistent, which is what we have done over the last two months,” he said.

“We just need to go about our games as we have been doing, don’t change anything or look too far ahead.

“We’ll just look to the game tomorrow, hopefully get a win there and then move on.

“I think it’s important we remember what happened in September, when we lost six in the league.

“We were struggling, but the team spirit stayed really strong.

“I think that’s put us in good stead for now because we know how much we were hurting and we don’t want to go back there.”
