Oxford United skipper: 'We were rubbish'

Goalkeeper Wayne Brown sums up the mood as Oxford United concede goal No 3 at Fleetwood Goalkeeper Wayne Brown sums up the mood as Oxford United concede goal No 3 at Fleetwood

JAKE Wright did not pull any punches after Oxford United’s 3-0 defeat at Fleetwood Town on Saturday, describing the performance as “rubbish”.

The U’s were second best for the opening hour, by which time the Cod Army had taken advantage of defensive errors to lead 2-0.

A late rally from the visitors failed to yield any clear-cut chances and salt was rubbed into the wounds with a third goal late on.

It ended Oxford’s four-game winning run in npower League Two – and Wright had no complaints about the result.

“We gave away some sloppy goals – let’s not beat around the bush, we weren’t good enough. We were rubbish,” United’s skipper said.

“It happens in football sometimes when you can’t really put your finger on it, but they turned up and were better than us.

“We deserved nothing from the game.

“Obviously the first goal was a bit of a freak one, but it happens and after that you have to roll your sleeves up and go again and I don’t think we really did that.

“We had a little go in the second half, but we didn’t really get going.”

The defeat halted United’s eight-match unbeaten league run, which had turned their season around and saw them on the fringe of the play-offs.

There is an opportunity to put Saturday’s performance behind them, when play-off rivals Burton Albion visit the Kassam Stadium tomorrow night.

Wright believes the form the U’s had been in means they are far better placed to bounce straight back, compared to the previous meeting with the Brewers.

He said: “I think it was a massive game anyway because of where they are in the league.

“We owe them one after they stuffed us 4-0 at their place.

“That was in that tough time in September when we weren’t going well.

“If this result had come then, it would have been hard to take because we’d be looking round saying ‘where do we go from here?’ “We need to put it right on Tuesday, but we know we can go again and beat the teams that are above us.

“We’ve done it in the last few games and there’s no reason why we can’t get three points on Tuesday night.”

erm cheers Jake but I think we got the idea that team was rubbish just after the final whistle. My long held cynicism tells me to expect a return of the run of defeats we suffered back in September because inconsistency is what Wilder seems to do best. Loved to be proved wrong but the pattern of win some lose a few more has been with us since Wilder took over. Lesser teams with fewer resources have been better managed and been far more successful.

A win against Burton is vital as is promotion this season. Wilder has had plenty of time to move forwards and unless we go up he really needs to depart.

Next 4 games includes 3 at home so 9pts is not a big ask. It would be nice if the club actually apologised to fans who made the long trek to Fleetwood and wasted money and time on a team that clearly couldn't be bothered to play.

I could of told you lot your rubbish you dont need one of the players to tell you.

Your season is going no where fast.

Oh and were fourth in L1 with two games in hand on other teams so much for you lot saying we would go straight back down.
Onwards and Upwards for the Robins whilst you lot under your great leader Wilder are going into oblivion.
By the way all you lot that were getting excited about the bull that was put in the papers last week about our club a full apology was written yesterday admitting they had made a massive mistake and have agreed compensation with us for the libelous article they wrote.
So dont believe everything you read for those of you who can read as i know its difficult for some of you in Oxford.

AL - avoiding name calling or saying nothing sometimes has a far greater impact than that.

Falling hook line and sinker and biting like that serves to increase the banter you'll get.

They have not got the intelligence to fool anyone eg "could OF" - bottom set pupil. Le God with the subtlety associated with it - still that has not stopped Rooney or Beckham making fortunes. STFC has many intelligent fans - why do they come on here? "Just the banter init?" - you brighter and/or naturally more pleasant ones , please show some maturity - you have much in common with many Us fans. No more from pompous self important me for a while on the 'abuse' . My retaliatory "going bust" was silly - we do need STFC , Reading FC (far too good for far too long) and even little WWFC - but will it prove true?

Banter? I can do banter Chish but these three couldn't string a sentence together if it came in the post already joined up.
