Davis wants Oxford United defenders to chip in

LIAM Davis thinks the back four could do more to help take on some of the Oxford United goalscoring burden.

Defenders have contributed just five goals to the total this season, with Harry Worley the only player to score more than once.

The U’s have scored just four goals in their last eight games, one of which was a thunderbolt from Davis in the 2-1 defeat to Fleetwood Town last month.

The left back said: “Goals can come from anywhere, we can’t just rely on our strikers for goals because there are 11 players out there, obviously we can let the goalkeeper off. “We probably could chip in with a bit more. “We’re not going to put pressure on ourselves to score goals because at the end of the day we’re defenders and if we get a clean sheet sometimes that feels as good as scoring. “We send the centre halves up for set pieces, maybe we could get better with those.”

I think this is incorrect - Johnny Mullins scored a couple during his loan spell.

It's a fact that we concede a fair few at set pieces but fail to convert our chances from our own set pieces, just look at the number of corners we have had over the past few games and we haven't converted enough, only one I think since Christmas. Confidence is a huge thing in Football and this side, despite the support they are given, lacks confidence. I don't think the pitch at home helps but having said that away sides don't seem to object to playing on it, OU look a better side away from home and if they can improve the home form starting against Vale the season could yet end well. Can this post be considered negative.
