DEANE Smalley struck the winner to complete a fantastic few days as Oxford United followed up their win at leaders Gillingham by beating second-placed Port Vale.
Alfie Potter put the home side ahead, latching onto a mistake from Darren Purse, but a thunderbolt from Doug Loft quickly levelled the scores.
United had to weather some heavy pressure after the break, but bounced back to land a knockout blow from Smalley 14 minutes from time.
They had an opportunity to make the closing stages more comfortable, but Sean Rigg saw a penalty saved.
It did not prove costly, as United held on for another big win - their first at home since New Year's Day.
Josh Parker came in for Simon Heslop in the only change to the U's side which began the win at Gillingham in midweek.
New signing Scott Davies was fit enough to make a strong bench, alongside Michael Duberry, Andy Whing, Tom Craddock and James Constable.
The confidence generated by the 1-0 victory in Kent was clear from the outset.
It took just ten seconds for Potter and Smalley to link up, but the one-two just went awry as Vale cleared the danger.
The lively front two caused the visitors' big centre backs problems when the ball was on the ground.
For once the bumpy Kassam Stadium pitch helped the home side, who took the lead in the tenth minute.
A bobble caught out Darren Purse, whose backpass fell well short of goalkeeper Chris Neal. Potter, full of belief after netting the winner at Priestfield, was alive to the danger and ran through before coolly curling in a finish.
Doug Loft almost levelled within a minute, sending a dipping shot just past the post.
The Vale skipper caught his next shot, on 16 minutes, much sweeter.
Latching on to a header from Tom Pope, the midfielder caught his shot perfectly from 20 yards and it flew into the top corner past an unsighted Luke McCormick.
Another header from Pope, the division's top marksman, set up Calvin Andrew to send an overhead kick wide shortly afterwards.
United shrugged off the setback and continued to cause problems going forward.
On 24 minutes they were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty.
Parker got clear on the left and crossed for Potter, who was clumsily bundled over by a backtracking Ryan Burge, but referee Eddie Ilderton waved away the protests.
The home side finished the half well.
Rigg brushed off a finger injury to glance a header wide, while Michael Raynes nodded off target at an Adam Chapman corner.
The set piece was the midfielder's last involvement and he was substituted for tactical reasons just before the break for Andy Whing.
Vale began to exert themselves after the break as United increasingly found it difficult to clear their lines.
Just before the hour Jake Wright was caught on the ball and Ryan Burge's chip was helped on to the top of the crossbar by McCormick.
United had to weather a succession of corners, with Burge again coming close after robbing Parker. This time his swerving shot just cleared the crossbar.
James Constable came on for the final 25 minutes and within seconds fired a shot wide to get the home crowd going.
The striker played a part in United's second goal, which arrived 14 minutes from time.
Constable fired a low ball across the six-yard box, which Pope almost turned into his own net.
The ball flew over the bar for a corner, which was only cleared to Whing. The midfielder turned down the chance to shoot and instead laid the ball off for Smalley to blast a shot through Neal's legs and into the net.
United continued to press and were rewarded with a penalty seven minutes from time when Davis was upended by Burge.
Smalley initially had the ball, but Rigg took on the duties against his former club. The winger struck his shot low to Neal's right, but the goalkeeper superbly tipped it round the post.
It might have been costly, but United did well to run down the clock against a Vale side who were unable to build concerted late pressure.

Seems we are both singing from the same hymn sheet, both of us think the side underperform in the main then against the top two sides they go out and work really hard, put in a shift and get great results, coming after the dour match v York it illustrates what a Jekyll and Hyde team we support but also shows we do have some decent players, credit to CW for changing things around a bit and to the players for responding so well. Now to keep it up and have a good run in. Relegation? Who said we could be in danger of it?

BUT I still am disappointed with the season as a whole and want the management team to leave at the end of the season, the fans and there continued support deserve better, Port Vale even though they lost showed just what a team they are, we could be better.

if we had lost these last two the bottom of the table would have been looking uncomfortably close, but now we can look up rather than down again thank god.
my own view on CW is that he is a decent manager who has taken us forward but with the poor home form this year the fans have just got a bit bored with him. unless we get to wembley a change may be better for him as well as the club. but we'll have to make the next appointment a good one or we may regret the change.

great win. when there's a bit of confidence there we are a good side who can beat anyone, including rotherham on tue and the bench is looking strong too right now.

Can't be any worse can it?
Our only consistency has been our inconsistency.

well chish , looks like your managerial appointment may be apopular one although i expect le god is sobbing quietly in a darkened room over the departure of his italian hero. im of the opinion that di canio showed his true colours when he walked out on you when things got a bit tough. di canio was a good coach but has a lot to learn about managment as his ego blinds him to his own faults and blames everone else. the commitment and loyalty that he preached was sadly lackingat the end.
His guidance got us out of L2 and his presence raised a lot of interest good and bad.
We had a good start yesterday with the new guy - but its early doors I'm sure there are some more tears at bedtime to follow, we never do it the simple way.
BaB mentioned JHBank as punt for manager - listening to Jimmy talk I'm not sure if its me or not, but I find it difficult to understand the points he is trying to get over - perhaps it is lost in translation. He was in the frame for the STFC job.

A great turn- round and I am very pleased to have seen both. Well done the manager & co.
Jake W worth £1m on his last two games alone; and as someone said yesterday, get Luke M signed up as he could be good, either for us or to make money when Clarkey is fit.
But now what was with the Chapman humiliation, Chris? He was having a 'mare, and can look much too casual at times - but why do that to him if you want to keep him? Surely better all round to get him in at HT and tell him - a b******ing in front of the team just as effective? You're the manager - but the are ways and ways....!

I'll tell you what will happen, we'll come close enough to show promise but fall short, Wilder will get another contact and we'll be having the same discussions next season.
Good wins but I'd still prefer good riddance. I've been an Oxford fan for a very long time and the story never changes.

Beating 2 top teams means nothing; remember we did the double over Swindon last season. They went up, we finished with a whimper because we can't beat the fair to middling sides.

I suppose when it comes down to it it's the reason why our players are in this League and Wilder too, when they are good they can be very good but more often than not they are mediocre. In reply to those who say I am negative, maybe I am but as i see it I only post on what I see on the pitch and how I feel the team perform, it's because I don't want to see us non league again that I find the mediocre so hard to take especially when the team can then play so much better even on this apology of a pitch. As Aylesbury Ox said we neat Swindon home and away last term but they got promoted, we have just beaten the top two but they may still go up and we may stay in League two, we have some tough games against teams around and below us and we need to win those too. They are just as important games to win too.
