BOWLS: Headington swoop to lift Hawker Cup
10:00am Wednesday 28th August 2013 in Sport
Headington’s Howard Watts snatched the Hawker Cup from Banbury Borough’s grasp with a dramatic last bowl for a 42-41 win in the final at Oxford City & County.
Borough led 41-39 with one end to play on each rink in the Oxfordshire Bowling Association’s double fours decider, but the fates then swung in Headington’s favour.
Banbury’s Calvin Carpenter, playing the last bowl of the match on his rink against skip Ian Snowdon, was unfortunate to see it give his opponents one shot and a 23-15 win.
That left Headington’s other rink, skipped by Watts, requiring two shots against Mark Sykes’s side to win the match instead of four.
Headington’s Alan Manger ran the jack into the ditch with his second bowl, which stayed on the green for shot, and it was then down to who could get shot or second bowl.
It was Watts, with the match’s final delivery, who succeeded in drawing second wood, to pick up the trophy by one shot, despite his four being beaten 26-19.
In the semi-finals, Headington beat Watlington 53-30, while Banbury Borough defeated Carterton 49-29.
The third place play-off saw Watlington hold on for a 41-37 win against Carterton.
Watlington established a commanding lead, but picked up only one shot to their opponents’ 13 over the last four ends on each rink.
