OXFORDSHIRE oarsmen struck gold for Great Britain & Northern Ireland at the World Championships in Chungju, Korea today.
Britain’s men’s eight featuring Oxford’s Andy Triggs Hodge, Oxford Blue Pete Reed plus Henley residents Alex Gregory and Will Satch edged out Germany in the final and bagged their country’s first world gold in that boat.
Rowing alongside Leander Club members Tom Ransley, Dan Ritchie and Phelan Hill (cox) plus Mohamed Sbih and George Nash, they led for the final 1,500m to come home in 5mins 30.35secs.
Reed said: "It was an amazing race. We are part of history now in the British eight.”
Britain’s other medal on the final day came with a bronze from the lightweight men’s four of Henley resident Chris Bartley, his Leander Club colleagues Will Fletcher, Jonno Clegg and Adam Freeman-Pask.
Fran Houghton, from Wheatley, and teammate Vicky Meyer-Laker, finished fourth in the women’s double sculls final.
