CRICKET Oxford seal return to top flight
10:00am Monday 9th September 2013 in Sport
Oxford players were celebrating after clinching their immediate return to the top flight on Saturday.
A victory on run rate, when their 50-overs match at home to Dinton had been halted by rain, meant they finished well clear at the top of Division 2 West.
Their title margin was eventually 32 points after closest rivals Aston Rowant lost by 13 runs to Cove.
Oxford were in command when the rain came, having totalled an impressive 258-9 from their 50 overs.
Dinton were struggling at 167-5, needing 90 from the last 7.4 overs for victory.
Choosing to bat first, Oxford suffered a poor start losing both openers Andrew Clough and Vishane Perera with just three runs on the board.
Rapid half-centuries from Stewart Laudat and Jamie Perkin put the hosts back on track.
Further useful contributions from skipper Ian Crosby, whose 51 came from 48 balls, and Shami Mendis lifted Oxford to a useful total.
Dinton were never up with the rate after tidy spells from Brad Sutherland, Philip Evans and Tom Godsell, who took 2-15 in 6.2 overs.
The main resistance came from Mike Sutliff, who was 59 not out, when the rain came – and Oxford’s celebrations could begin
