BOWLS: Carterton cruise to maiden cup glory
10:00am Wednesday 11th September 2013 in Sport
Carterton captured the Oxford & District League Cup for the first time with an emphatic 103-47 win over West Witney in the final under the Kidlington floodlights.
After a shock victory over holders Headington in the semi-finals, West Witney were unable to field a full-strength team for the decider in the competition, sponsored by S&J Timms Cleaning Services and Frances Baker, of Rub A Dub Dub laundrette.
With many of their first-choice bowlers away on a club tour, they were always likely to struggle against the quality of Carterton – and that’s how it turned out.
The game started in sunshine and West Witney captain Kevin Alder picked up a six on the first end.
But this was more than matched across the other three rinks, as Carterton quickly gained the upper hand.
Within five ends, Carterton had built up a 24-shot lead and, by the time the floodlights had come on, there was no way back for West Witney.
Carterton continued to dominate, winning on all four rinks to secure victory by a resounding 56 shots.
Tim Warner’s rink picked up a ‘hot-shot’ eight on the way to a 28-6 win.
Gordon Walker’s four triumphed 28-11, while Paul Sharman’s side cruised home 25-10.
Robbie Clanfield’s rink completed the full house for Carterton by coming from behind to defeat Alder 22-20.
Carterton captain Stuart Richens said: “It was great to get to the league cup final for the first time, but even better to come away as winners.”
He also had sympathy for his opponents, saying: “I’d like to congratulate West Witney on the spirited performance they gave under the circumstances, and look forward to defending the trophy next season.”
West Witney 47, Carterton 103 (West Witney skips first): T Prew 10, P Sharman 25; K Alder 20, R Clanfield 22; J Lacey 11, G Walker 28; E Dorling 6, T Warner 28.
