CYCLE SPEEDWAY: Tired Horspath fail to find top gear in final
12:00pm Saturday 14th September 2013 in Sport
Horspath had to settle for runners-up spot in the British Team Championship at East Park, Wolverhampton.
Led by captain Lewis Bates, Horspath knocked the Poole Comets out in their semi-final to qualify for the final against Wednesfield Aces.
The Midlanders took an early lead on Horspath, who suffered two exclusions in the first three heats.
Mark Boaler and Dave Carmichael started to pull the points back in heat five with a 6-4 heat advantage against Craig Marchant and Ricky Johnson.
By half-time, Horspath were trailing by 17 points and defeat was inevitable as they went down 110-67.
The Horspath team tried hard, but their riders were left drained by their semi-final efforts in contrast to the new line-up that Wednesfield fronted.
Scores Horspath: Boaler 18, Bates 15, Munden 7, Thaw 7, Carmichael 7, Harrison 5, Payne 5, Rudman 3. 67 Wednesfield: Mould 19, Heard 17, Aris 16, Griffiths 15, Marchant 12, Jewkes 12, Johnson 11, Haddock 8. 110.
Meanwhile, George Horsley was the best of the home riders when Horspath hosted the sixth round of the British Youth and Junior League on Saturday.
Riding in the under 14 age group, Horsley competed against twice British champion Will Tibdall, from Exeter, and took third place in the A final.
In the under eight event, Horspath’s Fabian Sherriff finished on five points.
The host club’s Emille Garth, Harrison Todd and Josh Ramshaw all scored eight points in the under 12s, while Jordan Richardson just missed out on the under 16 final on countback.
