HOCKEY: Court stars as Hawks claim draw
8:47am Friday 20th September 2013 in Sport
Two goals from Emily Court saw Oxford Hawks Ladies recover from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Exeter’s ISCA in their Investec Conference West opener.
Hawks had to rely on goalkeeper Jess Hudson to keep ISCA at bay, but the hosts finally broke the deadlock with a well taken mid-air deflection.
Oxford raised their game after the break, with 17-year-old Briony Hearn in commanding form at full back.
But against the run of play ISCA doubled their lead from a penalty flick after Hudson was deemed to have taken the attacker’s stick before the ball.
Hawks responded well and with ten minutes left, scored from a well-worked corner, with Court taking the final touch.
Some strong work in midfield from Lucy Stewart resulted in a second corner, which was perfectly executed, culminating in an equaliser for Court. Lyn Cockshott scored five times as Oxford Ladies 2nd won 6-5 at Milton Keynes 2nd in the first round of the EHB Women’s 2nd XI Cup.
Oxford took an early two-goal lead with two clinical penalty-corner strikes Cockshott. Milton Keynes levelled via a breakaway and a penalty corner, but Cockshott’s third put Oxford 3-2 up at half-time.
The hosts equalised again before a good ball from Bev Cousins was well deflected by Niki Forecast for Oxford's fourth goal. Milton Keynes scored twice to take the lead for the first time in the match.
Cockshott levelled, but then had another attempt ruled out from a short corner for being marginally too high.
She sealed victory for Oxford soon afterwards with her fifth goal.
