THE weekend wind made fishing pretty difficult, but the Thames roach were to the fore again in many matches.
Pete Clarke’s fine season continued on a moody river at Sandford where he captured the Littlemore AS Steve Denny Shield fished by 17, who produced a total weight of 88lb 4oz.
Clarke had double the weight on the next angler with a quality net of roach to 1lb taken on stick float with maggot.
Mark Shepherd used the same tactics and also returned a good net of roach and skimmers for a second-placed 9.9.0, while Brian Hutchings opted for the pole and maggot to take 8.2.0 of roach.
The practice match for the Angling Trust Oxford Winter League at Radley was fished by 28 anglers and the gales resulted in a few broken poles.
Sensas A 4 matchmen filled the first three places.
Darren Wright drew a peg below the boathouse and had an all-roach catch on pole at 10m with maggot on the hook for a winning 23.10.0.
Nigel Bearman was next second and had a similar net of roach on the pole and maggot for 21.3.0, followed by Martin Kirk with 21.0.0.
John Beesley (Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths) had two good chub totalling 11.12.0 in his fourth-placed 19.12.0.
Beehive AC fished a pairs match at a gale-hit Panshill, which still produced more than 600lb of fish.
Shawn Percy took top spot with 75.0.0 of carp to pole and maggot – despite losing a pole section which blew into the lake, and then stepping on his spare one.
Kevin Jeacock was close behind with 72.0.0 of carp to pole and pellet, followed by Bob Alder with 57.0.0 of carp on pole and maggot.
Pairs winners: D Simmons & S Percy 125.0.0.
Tackley Estates AC were back on the Oxford Canal at the Rock of Gibraltar where the bream were in the mood to play and wanted worm.
John Spencer topped the 12-strong field with 16.0.0 of slabs on legered worm, followed closely by Anthony Alder with 15.1.0 of perch and bream to waggler and worm.
Frank Malone finished in third place with 8.12.0 of perch and bream on pole, caster and worm.
Kidlington AS were also on the canal for their Henry Clarke Cup at Grovelands and it fished well for the 14 anglers despite the wind and heavy boat traffic.
Alan Steele caught roach to 1lb on pole and caster for a winning 8.2.0, pipping Henry Clarke, who had 7.12.0 for roach and perch on pole and worm.
Dave Pether had a mixed bag on pole and maggot for 6.4.0 and third.
