RUGBY UNION: Jewell says confident Exiles have got the buzz back
Seb Jewell says there has been a greater buzz around London Welsh this week after their stellar victory over Rotherham Titans.
The Exiles roared back to the top of the Greene King IPA Championship with a 47-16 hammering of Rotherham at the Kassam Stadium.
And as Welsh prepared for tomorrow’s trip to Cornish Pirates, full back Jewell said the players had an extra spring in their step.
“The confidence and enjoyment factor has come back to the club,” he said.
“Even when we had won previously, we had not performed how we wanted to.
“We were able to click much more against Rotherham.
“It was a dry day and the pitch held up well.
“The onus was on us to play with width and there was a relaxed atmosphere to play in.”
Welsh made a real statement against the Titans and the mood afterwards was in marked contrast to the previous week’s 36-15 humbling away to Plymouth Albion.
“We just drew a line under the Plymouth game,” said Jewell.
“We know as a group that we are not going to play like that again.”
As is their custom, Welsh began their week with a video analysis session on the Rotherham match.
Although it was far from a self-congratulation session, the players had much to be happy with.
“We said we have scored seven tries, but there were still things that we got wrong,” said Jewell.
“We have still not put together that full performance.
“However, it was still a meeting we came out of on a high.”
If it goes ahead, tomorrow’s match in Penzance is set to be played in soggy conditions.
Can Welsh get close to the standards they achieved aginst Rotherham?
“You would like to think so,” said Jewell. “But the weather seems to be against us.
“It’s easier to play well on a football pitch in better conditions.
“We will have to tighten things up, but there is no reason why we can’t play the way we want to on Sunday.”
“If we need to grind out a 3-0 win, that’s what we’ll have to do.”
