Mark Ward’s long wait proved fruitful as he took the £120 prize for the Marston FTB angler to record the biggest weight from the River Cherwell this season.

Ward caught his winning 13lb bream in the first match of the campaign.

On Sunday, Ward had to settle for second place in the final match – the Pipeline Centre Cup – with 1.8.0.

The winner was Graham Bradshaw, who drew a fancied bream area, but with none showing, changed plans and fed chopped worm under a nearside tree.

He was rewarded with two perch for a winning weight of 3.14.0.

Wayne Rudman was third with 1.7.0.

Jason Smith may not have figured in Masons AC’s final points league match of the season, but finished up as champion.

Phil Light, one of eight anglers to fish on the Canal at Rock of Gibraltar, won the match with one decent perch and a bream on groundbait feeder and maggot for 4.7.0.

Second was Yan Stankowski with 3.7.0, with Bob Yeomans third on 3.1.0.

Final league placings: 1 J Smith 156.5pts, 2 Y Stankowski 150, 3 P Armstrong 145.5.

David Pether won Kidlington AS’s Last Chance Cup on the Oxford Canal at Grovelands, landing a net of perch and roach on pole for 3.11.0.

Dougie Foreshew was second with 3.6.0 just ahead of Jamie Barrett’s 3.5.0.

None could stop Jason Bean comfortably winning the points table.

Final league placings: 1 J Bean 118, 2 T Lester 104, 3 H Clarke 99, 4 D Foreshew 68.

Mick Merry took Tackley Estates’ Last Chance Shield at Fernhill Lakes where 12 fished and six blanked.

Merry won with one carp of 18.10.0, caught on pole with maggot. John Spencere was second with 11.10.0, while Predator’s Monty Finemore came third with 3.10.1.

North Oxford AS were again forced to switch their match from the Thames at Godstow to the Waltonwell Road stretch of the Oxford Canal, where a single ounce separated the top two.

Maurice Winstone, with 6.9.0 of mainly perch on chopped worm, was just ahead of Ian Fisher, who had 6.8.0 of skimmers and roach on bread. Roger Brown was third with 5.3.0.

Meanwhile, catching big specimens is nothing new for well-known Oxford Pike Angling Club member Tony Hallatt.

But it was the method by which he caught this 17llb 12oz Thames pike that pleased him.

Tony used a system he had tried only once before – a float-fished, weighted and multi-coloured lure, modified to lie horizontally.

He reports that the fish put up a strong fight in the fast-flowing waters.
