ANGLING: Early fish the key as Tomkins triumphs

First published in Sport

THE Oxford Canal was in good nick for the 16 anglers fishing the Kidlington AS Open on the Highwayman stretch in Kidlington.

Winner Anthony Tomkins (Marston TFB AC) put together 10lb 13.8oz of roach and skimmers, mostly caught in the first 30 minutes of the match, on pole with punched bread.

The next two anglers used the same tactics. Not far behind was Dave Scott-Picton, of the host club, with 9.2.0 for second, followed by Maurice Winstone (North Oxford) with 5.4.0.

More than 500lbs hit the scales from the 15 anglers as Beehive AC kicked off their new season with the Charity Shield at Panshill.

Conditions were good and Kevin Jeacock made the most of them by catching 79.4.0 of carp to pole and pellet.

Second-placed Bob Alder used the same tactics for 61.8.0, followed by Marcus Molson with 54.4.0 of carp on pole and banded pellet.

Tackley Estates AC staged the first of six closed season matches on Stable Lake, which produced nearly 100lb for the winner.

Matt Ryman (Predator) finished top of the 18-strong entry with 98.0.0 of carp on the long pole with maggot to the island.

Terry Whitington (North Oxford) used worm to the island to land 58.12.0 for second and he also had the biggest carp of 9.14.0.

Kieran Thorne caught 39.8.0 on pole and maggot for third.
