Deane doesn't deserve this treatment, says Hunt

David Hunt argued Deane Smalley deserved better after some Oxford United fans appeared to cheer when the striker was substituted.

The change was made on 54 minutes, shortly after Fleetwood Town had struck their second goal at the Kassam Stadium.

Smalley had not been able to cause the visitors many problems, but the same could be said for the majority of his teammates in the 2-0 defeat.

A section of the U’s support had already chanted for James Constable to come on and when it happened, some seemed to be celebrating Smalley’s withdrawal.

Hunt thought it was harsh to single the striker out.

He said: “Deane’s worked very hard for the team and wants to give his all.

“Earlier in the season he was firing on all cylinders and unfortunately he had an injury which has set him back a bit.

“I understand frustration, totally, but when you see things like that it’s not nice.”

The full back admitted there had been times where, as a spectator, he had been disappointed by a performance, but had not considered such action.

“You get frustrated in regards to having your own opinion, but I don’t think I’ve ever cheered for someone to get subbed,” he said.

“I think that’s a little bit disrespectful.”

On the game itself, there was a disappointment at the manner of Fleetwood’s goals.

The first came from a corner, which was allowed to reach David Ball at the back post, while Antoni Sarcevic buried a free-kick routine to give the Cod Army a cushion.

While accepting the overall display had fallen short, conceding from set-pieces increased the irritation for Hunt.

He said: “It’s more the fact of lads just switching off.

“It’s happened too many times recently and we should know if we’ve got a job then we make sure we do it.

“I can accept a worldy goal, I can accept freak goals, but these ones do hurt.”

He added: “Unfortunately it’s been two set plays which have decided the game, which we know we should do better with.

“But other than that it hasn’t been a good performance and is something we’re going to address.”

Smalley is not alone in deserving criticism the rest of the team are just as guilty of a lack of desire. 7 defeats in last 10 games is shocking form and the blame starts with the players - Lewis was weak to change this drastic loss of form I just hope Waddock experiments with fringe players and maybe wake up some of the 1st team who think they can't be replaced.

I find it's disrespectful these players insult the yellow shirts.

Rubbish managerial appointment, if we'd got Martin Allen we wouldn't have coneded 2 sloppy goals from set pieces because he makes his teams organised to deal with them and make the best of them the other end.

All the good work & points plus that amazing away record we had has gone!!!
The chairman has made it clear he does NOT want to spend on decent players. All these free's, has been's & crocks are NOT a good investment in a club like ours. The only word that describes the current situation is "KAMIKAZE". The team & new Management don't seem to have a clue. Take a look at other clubs trying to improve by bringing in new manger's. They can make a difference, not bringing any decent player's while we needed to was madness. We are now 8th, mid table looks looming. What a wast of effort & support from a set of fantastic fans. A real shame.

Smalley has been robbing a wage for 3 seasons now. I don't think our slump is down to Smalley alone, its a team game. Although I would never cheer somebody being substituted I can understand the frustration of the supporters towards him. The consistency of his performances since he has been here has been attrocious. I actually think he has ability, but his application is non existant.

Wilder should have got rid last season, although in all the time Wilder was here I don't think he ever made a good decision on a striker. Our forward play is hopeless and has been for a while.

I thought the treatment of Smalley on Saturday (and on previous occasions too) was pretty disgusting. The ball is often played to him at above chest height, he gets little to no support from midfield, What is he supposed to do in that situation?

Whilst he was going off the pitch, a 'lady' who sits not to far from me, stood up and shouted "F**k off Smalley you C**t" - What the hell does that achieve?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Smalley had a good game, but neither did anyone, to aim abuse at your own players like that is not on. For a starter, the 2 full backs were awful on Saturday and i didn't hear them getting stick like smalley takes.

Perhaps the players can take their anger at Smalley's treatment onto the field next game so that for a change they are fired up and ready to go; who knows we might even end up with a goal to celebrate.

I am no fan of Smalley's and indeed in the time he has been here goal scoring has been an issue, he simply does not (like the manger) inspire me in front of goal.

He cant head, kick or pass a ball to a yellow clad player, this in itself means he does not deserve to continue to be selected, Beano is better, and for me now this season is almost gone go back to Marsh with Beano, and put Roberts on the Bench to see what he is like against some men.

Although Smalley was one of Wilders worst signings. And he has made some stinkers for OU, no player deserves that treatment and if that foul mouthed lady can be found she should be banned from buying tickets to the club for life. I haven't been happy with the dreadful management and ownership of the club since Kassam took us over, having said that I have always acknowledged Kassam saved us from probable extinction albeit for his own greedy ends but I would never boo either the team or an individual preferring to just leave quietly without applauding them off.

So agree with this !
Hunt , another of Wilder's signings is simply awful.
As far as I am concerned, he can join Smalley on the not offering you a contract list.
And Smalley- are we as supporters not able to voice our opinions when we see him play so poorly , not just this season but last as well ??

the management team have done Smalley no favours by continuing to pick him after a truly woeful performance at southend and then another at dagenham, when his confidence is obviously at rock bottom, unbelievable really.

Hunt and Newey were Wilder's signings- brought in to shore up his defence minded tactics. Batt and Davis were more exciting and yes sometimes left the back line exposed. I know which pairing I preferred to watch. Unfortunately GW is stuck with Wilder's rubbish until the end of the season. Try some development squad players I hear.. damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. He tried to give the only pacy, exciting player a free role Saturday and all you armchair managers thought Williams was being played out of position. I watched GW and he was desperately trying to get the team playing wide but they're all on CW and ML auto pilot. They don't seem to want to change so GW has no choice but to dump them and bring in his own brand of player and hopefully some pace, creativity and width that has been lacking for years.

Smalley was played at right midfield second half against Mansfield at home .This was his best game i had seen him play. Why wasnt he left in that position. The management of him has been poor he seems to be played from one position to another week in and week out.He now seems to be the whipping boy for the poor team performances Raynes was last year.Staurdays debacle was due to the poor players we have inherited from CW era and GW bizzare team and player position selection. We should have been on thre front foot from the start constable kitson connelly on.It is too late to start experimenting we need to win games.Next season keep wright mullins wing raynes clarke kitson connelly if possible ,the development players get rid of the rest.
