Oxford United bow out on penalties

The Oxford Times: Off the mark: Danny Rose Off the mark: Danny Rose

OXFORD United’s woes on the pitch continued last night as they were knocked out of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup at Kidlington.

The Hellenic Premier Division side won the semi-final 4-3 on a penalty shoot-out after a goalless 120 minutes at Yarnton Road.

Kidlington skipper Lewis Brownhill kept his nerve to convert the winning spot- kick, after Danny Rose and Tyrone Marsh had failed from 12 yards.

United had named a relatively strong side, with seven of their starting line-up having played for the first-team this season.

They had several good chances in a bright opening, but were unable to make the most of them.

Having weathered the storm, Kidlington came into the game.

Brownhill twice went close, forcing Max Crocombe into a smart save with one shot and firing another just wide, in a feisty second half where the hosts collected a flurry of bookings.

Marsh had an 89th-minute header cleared off the line, but Kidlington held on and played out an uneventful extra half-hour, before booking their place in the final on penalties.

Kidlington: Hyslop, C Weedon, Boxer, Quainton, B Weedon, Duerden (Woodbridge 66, Turner 108), Rice, Brownhill, Castle, Bone (Cassettari 93), Coyle. Unused subs: Mason, Mills.

Oxford Utd: Crocombe, Bevans, Long, Grant, Lynn, Rigg (Hackett 110), Rose, Meades, O’Dowda, Shama, Marsh.

Unused subs: Hill, Cundy, Calvin, Ingram.

The team was "Crocombe, Bevans, Long, Grant, Lynn, Rigg (Hackett 110), Rose, Meades, O’Dowda, Shama, Marsh."

Not 7 first teamers. In fact not even one first teamer. It was a youth side, make no mistake.

Not one first teamer, when did you last go to a game. Rigg & Rose are first choices, Crocombe, Bevans, Long, Meades & Marsh will probably be on the bench if not in the team at Plymouth. Take it from me, this was not a youth side Some may have been from the development squad..that is not .the youth team.

He's probably not been to a game for some time, as I understand from several who claim to know of him that he lives abroad. A couple of chaps I know from Brize Norton say he's with them and lives on Ascension Island although another colleague of theirs says he lives in Paraguay. Definetlley enough played against Kidlingtons who have had some first team experience to say there were "players who had 1st team experience". The game answered my question, why Marsh doesn't feature in many games. He can't score either. Same old OU, powder puff in front of goal!

Should have been good enough to beat Kidlington though. Even with mostly development squad players in the team. Not that I am particularly bothered about it though and I suspect that the players felt the same way.

The worry though is that a losing culture has developed at the club. Easy to get into, not so easy to get out. We don't want a return to the first decade of this century with the club plummeting to near oblivion.

These 'kids' are paid professional footballers. If they cant beat a part time non pro outfit maybe they should look at themselves and consider an alternative career?

Another game without a goal too. We really are poor aren't we?!

Lenagan should pay Mike Ford to present a seminar to our first team squad - Seminar should be entitled 'How to get off your a**e and fight' Not that any of the 1st team would pay any attention, they'd be too busy rating themselves. Oxford City a fine example of how to react when things are not going so well -fighting relegation go on a four match unbeaten run and beat the league leaders. We're doing the opposite.
