Oxfordshire are waiting on the fitness of Richard West as they prepare for Sunday’s Group 4 clash with Staffordshire at Stone.

The Banbury all-rounder went off injured in Oxon’s 59-run victory over Berkshire last week, but hopes to recover in time.

“Richard will have a fitness test,” said captain Luke Ryan.

“He got hit on the foot while batting and then had to leave the field after bowling four overs.

“He has cracked a bone in his toe.

“It is very sore, but we will see how he goes.”

Ryan has therefore named a squad of 12 for the match, with experienced batsman and off-spinner Richard Kaufman added to the XI that beat Berkshire.

Should West be ruled out, Shabaz Alam will retain his place in the side.

“It was a very pleasing effort on Sunday,” said Ryan.

“It was a bit worrying when we were 81-5, but conditions weren’t great for batting early on.

“I was very pleased with how the seamers bowled. They put the ball in excellent areas and kept the pressure on.”

Staffordshire lost their opening match against Herefordshire, with ex-Worcestershire and Leicestershire man Kadeer Ali batting at No 4.

They are not regular opponents for Oxon, with Ryan admitting he did not know that much about them.

He added: “We’ll go in with confidence, but we won’t get carried away.

“Berkshire lost their first match last year and went on to win it.

“We won our first two matches by one wicket, but didn’t progress after that.

“This year we have started a bit better.

“Hopefully, we can build on that.”
