OXFORD University will be hoping to maintain their winning sequence over Cambridge in the four-day Varsity Match which gets under way in The Parks today.

The Dark Blues pulled off a remarkable one-wicket win against the odds in the One-Day contest at Lord’s last month.

But Oxford captain Gus Kennedy, a former Cambridge man, feels that result will have no bearing on this week’s clash.

“Cambridge got in a winning position at Lord’s through some good cricket,” he said.

“Although they will be disappointed to have lost, Cambridge are a strong side who will present a stern test.”

Oxford, who won by an innings and 186 runs last year after a record-breaking triple century from Sam Agarwal, name two changes from the Lord’s contest.

Ethan Fogarty will open the batting, while Joe O’Gorman will provide the spin option.

Oxford’s strength is their seam bowling, with Abi Sakande and Johnny Marsden contracted to Sussex and Derbyshire resptively.

Kennedy feels there will be a result given good weather.

“Both sides are stronger in bowling than batting, so the contest might not go all four day,” he said.
