OXFORD Junior Stars impressed on and off the ice at tournaments in Sheffield against teams from across England and Scotland.

Both the under 16 and under 14 teams qualified from their pools before narrowly missing out on trophies.

The younger age group were unbeaten in their round robin games to set up a meeting with Swindon in the final.

Harry Llewellyn and Cameron Jay Davison-Wright were on target as the clash finished 2-2 after overtime, with Swindon winning the shoot-out.

They played in pink jerseys specially made for the event to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

All the players contributed towards the charity by buying the shirts themselves, while donations collected between games took their total from the event to £405.

Sam Broughton, the team’s coach, said: “The atmosphere throughout the whole weekend was positive and so much fun which really helped with their success.

“The kids were great. I am proud of what they did on the ice, but most of all what happened off the ice.”

The Oxford Times:

  • Oxford Junior Stars under 16s also finished runners-up

The under 16s beat Grimsby 2-1 in their last group game to reach the final against Milton Keynes.

Stars twice hit the post before they were stung 20 seconds from the end, when Milton Keynes scored a penalty.

Proud coach Jeff Sykora said: “They truly carried each other through the tournament and played with guts, not for personal glory, but for each other.”
