Two tries on debut is not a bad way to mark your first appearance for your new club.

Chris Elder did just that in last Saturday’s win at Henley and now the London Welsh full back is eagerly looking forward to Wasps on Sunday.

Elder, who joined the Exiles in the summer from Plymouth Albion, seized his opportunity to lay down an early season marker with a try in either half in Welsh’s 64-0 win over the Hawks at Dry Leas.

However, compared to his Plymouth debut, when he scored three tries and five conversions in a 55-14 win over Exmouth, it wasn’t anything to get overly excited about.

“It’s always pleasing to get across the whitewash, but some of the other boys got in among the tries, so I wasn’t the only one,” said Elder, whose performances for Albion last season brought him to head coach Justin Burnell’s attention.

Most notably, Elder crossed for Plymouth in their victory over Welsh at Brickfields in January.

“I think London Welsh were a bit shocked that day,” he recalled.

“That was one of our best performances down at Plymouth. It was nice to be involved in it, but I think the London Welsh boys want to forget about that one.”

The England Under 18 international, who helped Esher to a second place finish in National League 1 before joining Esher in 2013, is now settling in to life well at London Welsh.

“Everyone’s really inviting and obviously with a lot of new guys everyone’s trying to find their own place as well. There’s a good team spirit and I’m loving it,” said Elder, who came through the academy at Wasps.

“We’re all looking forward to the Wasps game this week. It should give us an idea as to where we need to be for the start of the season.

“There’s definitely things to work on from the game, both personally and as a team, but it was great to come away with 64 points and to keep Henley off the scoresheet.”
