MICHAEL Appleton admits Oxford United’s losing start to the Sky Bet League Two season could have an effect on their search to attract players before the end of the transfer window.

The U’s go into Saturday’s home game against Portsmouth still looking for their first point of the campaign after three successive league defeats.

A lack of goals has prevented the side from converting performances into positive results, with their only strike coming from the penalty spot.

Appleton is aiming to bring in two attacking players before the window closes on September 1.

The U’s head coach is confident of recruiting the right type of player, but acknowledged some targets may just look at results and be put off.

He said: “It depends if the people you’re looking at do their due diligence properly.

“If they don’t, then it probably will have a negative effect.

“But if they do the right thing and speak to the right people I’m sure it will make the decision a bit easier.”

He added: “The reality is we’re a League Two side, but for me we’re playing well above that in terms of the quality of football.

“So we have to make sure when someone comes in and does play for Oxford, they’re at that standard.

“Hopefully over the next ten days or so we’ll find the right people.”

Well what a surprise.

Oxford United fans have been calling for players to be brought in before the start of the season and since the start of the season. The entire club and its fans know we need some forwards who can score goals.

What did people expect to happen to results without goalscorers? Of course we'd find it tough.

Talk about stating the obvious. No point blaming our league position on being unable to attract strikers, it should never have got to this stage,

This isn't rocket science. You can play the most attractive football in the world but if you don't put the ball in the onion bag you aren't going to win. We shouldn't have lost the last two games but for different reasons but we did. Need to start finding the net lads!

If potential player targets are having qualms and a negative mindset about joining us simply because of the view of the league table after 3 games, then that's not the type of player we want to recruit anyway..

People should be buying into the fact we should be making a realistic push to get out of this division based on resources and fanbase + longer term sustainability. The playing style and philosophy of the club. No disrespect to the smaller sized clubs who have got off to a flying start but unless serious cash is ploughed into the, they wont be able to maintain a charge up the leagues due to the resources they can muster.

Appleton talking gibberish - I agree with London Ox re if players look at 3 results and decide not to sign for us they're not the kind of player we need.

The new regime including the manager knew from day one we would need strikers and they claimed to have resources required to strengthen the team yet here we are in bottom 4 and no pts on the board. I'd prefer it if Appleton stopped his bizarre rambling and got his mate to release some funds for better quality players. A manager making excuses after 3 games is not what I'd call an ambitious one.

A silly and concerning excuse by the manager, is he trying to cover for the
lack of funds and the Chairman/Owner? I fear for the football clubs future if the 'funds' only stretch as far as young lads on work experience!!!!!!!!

Hear hear, the Morecambe game made the point startlingly obvious, you can play well and have more possession but, and it's a BIG BUT, but if you don't put the ball in their net then you can't win games! Simple! We need a proven scorer to bring on the younger less experienced players.

We have all known we need strikers, Gary waddocks appointment and cut backs which saw constable leave, the only striker we have had proved to me that there was no money in the club
Now these new guys have arrived with all the talk of investment it concerns me that we have loans again and do they have the funds, I am concerned that the other consortuim being local people may have been the better long term option
I fear for the future of our club being 60 I like many of you have been through great times with them, I hope one day we can return to a footballing side that plays good football, we dont have it at this present time.

Too much doom and gloom! Collins - good purchase. Long - excellent loan. Hylton - reasonable as back up. Meades moving towards full fitness. Team getting better week on week. One experienced striker required (preferably on season long loan - push for Grant Holt) and we will be around automatic promotion come May. No MA has not got best record (26% win rate) but he is young and also developing. Things are not golden but looking particularly rosey compared to late April!

You are not Oxford through and through. You only got the job because of the new people. Absolutely rubbish. If you paid a good striker good money he would come. I cannot see Matt Tubbs getting 2 grand a week at AFC Wimbledon. We have normally played well at 442. 18 shots in mid week shows we have the chances. With Constable gone, we just have no proven goal scorer. Unless we get that striker and no cheap loanees then we will always struggle. It is nor good making excuses after 3 games. You are getting some players in. I rather have a striker like Matts Tubbs than 3 loanees that are cheap and unproven. I can see us bottom 6. Hylton is ok as a replacement for Constable however we need another striker who is better. After this Saturdays game we will know whether we are still carrying on where we left in May. Desperate instead.

Beano (also known as James Constable), a striker so coveted by other clubs and so prolific. Remind me where he is again? Oh yes, he's plying his trade back in the Conference with Eastleigh (played 3, goals scored 0). This obsession with Constable needs to end. He served this club well and we'll always be grateful for the goals he did score, but he's now moved on and so should we.

Tubbs had already gone to AFC by time the new people had come in. The fault in not being able to get someone like him in lies with IL completely - the work on player recruitment should have been done in May and certainly no later than June. Most the decent strikers for this level had already found clubs before MA & his pals had arrived. Finding a striker who will score you 20+ goals a season is the holy grail for all clubs and it is not easy. Most clubs in this league have done their squad building and had full pre-seasons with them. We've been playing catch up ever since and it shows.

As for MA's managerial record, I think the guy deserves some slack their, his previous employers were all crackpot clubs where he was on a hiding to nothing. We'll have a clearer picture of the situation come 1. The end of the transfer window and 2. By mid-October when we have played more than just 3 games.

People should stop sharpening the knives. Yes we have made a poor start, everyone knows that and no one is happy about it. Last season we came storming out the blocks and where did that get us? Hopefully this start is just teething problems, it's amazing what one win can do for confidence. Let's just hope it comes sooner rather than later.

Agree, some....including me....start to panic and write things we shouldn't at this point of the season.
