Oxford's Andy Triggs Hodge guided Britain’s coxless four to a world championship gold medal with an imperious performance in Amsterdam, writes Mike Rosewell.

The double Olympic gold medallist judged his final perfectly as the crew only just missed a world best time in beating the USA into second place.

“A job well done,” said Triggs Hodge after the race. “It was really tough out there, but we knew what we had to do.

“We had to push on and really dominate and that’s what we did.”

Oxford University’s Constant-ine Louloudis, with an Olympic bronze to his credit in 2012, stroked the British eight to a great win in the final of the blue riband event.

Louloudis said: “In terms of physical effort it was huge, but in terms of leading the guys it was easy. They all wanted the same thing.”

One of the ‘guys’ was Matthew Tarrant, from Oxford Brookes, a relative newcomer and a happy man.

“That's what I train for every day,” said the former World U23 champion.

“I train to win and not to come second. I have been hungry for that.”

Brothers Richard and Peter Chambers, also of Oxford Brookes pedigree, were in Britain’s lightweight four that took the bronze medal.

A silver medal went to another Oxford Brookes performer, Scott Durant, in the coxed pairs.
