IZZY Lingard, captain of boats at Headington School, led by example when winning the senior IM1 single sculls event at Reading Small Boats Head.

Back in July, Lingard found herself unexpectedly in the Great Britain Coupe de la Jeunesse team and then surprised everyone by picking up bronze medals in both her single scull and the eight.

Lingard aims to better that in 2015 by being selected for the full GB team that will compete in Rio de Janeiro at the world junior championships.

Headington provided a substantial number of the 400 boats at Reading, racing in glorious autumnal weather.

It was likely, not least with so many entries, that they would find success and they were not disappointed with six wins.

In addition to Lingard’s victory, Headington’s J15 and J17 quads came home with the quickest times over the 3,700m course.

Other winners in single sculls were Hannah Hornby (J15) and Rosanna Little (J16).

St Edward’s, Oxford were also celebrating success in a single with Oscar von Hannover, just beating his teammate, Sam Hamilton-Peach, in the men’s novice event.

Further novice wins were enjoyed by City of Oxford sculler, Lou Francis, the St Edward’s men’s quad and Headington’s women’s quad.

With ages ranging from under 14 to over 70, seven boat types and a range of senior status events on offer, it was no surprise to see over 100 categories listed to compete in.

But a shame, nevertheless, that ten local crews were without sufficient opposition to merit being awarded a trophy.

Of these, the St Edward’s J17 girls could at least take gratification from being the fastest female coxless pair at the meeting.

Radley College also found themselves unopposed in the IM1 four and double, but were convincing winners in the junior coxed four.

Wallingford RC’s J16 girls’ won both the double and quad events, in the latter, at the expense of Abingdon RC who came in second and third.

Hinksey Sculling School under new coach, Charlie Jenkins, celebrated three wins thanks to the boys’ J14 and J18 quads and the girls’ J18 double sculls.

This weekend sees Weybridge Silver Sculls and the Senior British Championships.

The girls from Headington will be aiming to dominate the Evesham Junior Head.
