OXFORDSHIRE went second in Division 3 Central in the County Championships after a 10-5 victory over Worcestershire 2nd at Bartholomew School, Eynsham.

The hosts took all three points after a late surge.

It was 2-2 after the singles with James Buffham and Kathryn Schutterlin picking up Oxon’s points.

Buffham and Alistair Reed and Sarah Torgersen and Helen Richmond were undefeated in their respective men’s and ladies’ doubles.

Matt Harris and Chris Lim also picked up a rubber, leaving the score 7-5 going into the mixed.

Oxfordshire won all three of these matches in straight sets to clinch maximum points.

They will play leaders Derbyshire 2nd on Sunday, November 30.

Meanwhile, Oxfordshire 2nd climbed up to second in Division 4 Central after 13-2 demolition of Staffordshire 2nd at Newcastle High School.

The visitors got off to a flier by taking all four singles rubbers, courtesy of Chris Lim, Lauren Cooper, Matt Jackson and Emma Cramond.

Oxon added a whitewash in the ladies’ doubles, with Amber Wing and Nicola Patrick, plus Cooper and Cramond on song.

Staffordshire pulled one back by halving their men’s doubles against Lim and Martin Graham, but Oxfordshire’s Peter Frobisher and Jackson won both their games.

All three mixed matches went the distance and Oxon prevailed in two – Frobisher and Cramond plus Graham and Wing taking the spoils.

Young stars Alex Cook, Jack Bird and Becki Blair got Oxon off to a strong start by winning their singles matches.

Clare Hamilton and Blair plus Carolyn Tubby and debutant Kezia Lawson secured a ladies’ doubles rubber each.

In the men’s doubles, Bird maintained his unbeaten record, winning both men’s doubles with his partner Matt Jackson.

But first pair Cook and David Buckingham were edged out in two tight clashes.

Oxon led 7-5 going into the mixed doubles, where Bird and Blair, plus Buckingham and Tubby secured the decisive victories.

Bird has now won eight out of eight rubbers this season.
