JAKE Wright was delighted to shut out what he felt was one of the best attacks in Sky Bet League Two as Oxford United drew 0-0 at Portsmouth.

The hosts played Jed Wallace behind Matt Tubbs and Ryan Taylor, who between them had scored seven goals in the previous two games.

All had chances to improve the tally at Fratton Park, but were denied by a gritty defensive display.

Wright, United’s skipper, said: “Maybe a couple of months ago we’d have lost it.

“We didn’t win, but I think it was one of our best performances of the year.

“We’ve come to a team that’s confident and scoring a lot of goals, so to keep a clean sheet to get a point is a really good result.

“I think they’ve got the best front three I’ve played against in the league, apart from maybe Shrewsbury now.”

Wright made one excellent block early in the game on Taylor, but his best moment came to thwart the same man seven minutes from time.

The tall striker looked set to open the scoring when he got free in the penalty area, but Wright was decisive to put in a clean slide tackle which snuffed out the danger.

He said: “I was in the right place at the right time.

“I think if he had shot first time I wasn’t getting anywhere near it, but he took one and I knew I could get there.

“We spoke before the game we had to be really narrow because they were playing two up top and Wallace in behind.

“They were gambling a little bit because they wanted the win.

“It got a bit stretched, but luckily I got there just in time.”
