Headington School celebrated their centenary with a seventh consecutive gold medal in the Girls Championship Eights at the National Schools’ Regatta at Nottingham, writes JOHN WIGGINS.

The Headington girls had success on each of the three days and at all ages from J14 through to J18 with two golds, a silver and five bronzes.

Headington’s two title medals were achieved in the same race – the final of the girls championship eights, where the time trials and semi-finals incorporated second eights.

They qualified both for the final, where Headington’s first crew dominated to win, the second eight, in sixth place, won the gold medal for reserve crews.

Headington’s J15s claimed four bronze medals, in the first and second coxed quads, plus the girls’ eight and coxed four.

Their haul was completed by a third for the J14 octuple.

City of Oxford RC won a bronze through their double of Elise Stretton and Caitlin Donaldson, while Abingdon RC’s J15s girls double qualified for the semi-finals.

Abingdon School opened their account with a silver medal for Max Thompson in the J15 single.

A further bronze was achieved by the St Edward’s boys four, while their first crew missed out on the semi-finals of championship eights by less than a second.

Teddies took the ‘small’ final by storm in a time similar to those of Radley and Abingdon School, who were fourth and sixth respectively in the main final.

Radley, Abingdon and St Edward’s were outside the awards in championship eights on the final day, where new combinations were tried out, but subsets of those crews got consolation in the smaller boats.

Abingdon took silver in the championship coxless pairs and Radley won gold in the coxed fours, the event in which St Edward’s picked up a bronze.

Meanwhile, senior rowers were in action on the River Wye at the Monmouth Regatta.

Abingdon RC continued their strong form with the women’s masters D double scull of Carinna Denmar and Anita Green.
