CITY of Oxford and St Edward’s School made the most of flat and calm conditions to score victories at the Nottingham City Regatta, writes John Wiggins.

The City of Oxford women’s coxed four (Antonia Goëhler, Louisa Taylor, Madeleine Day, Caroline Watson and cox, Suzy Drohan) celebrated victory in their IM2 event.

In the IM2 eights, the St Edward’s boys (Karl Rieger, Jamie Johnstone, Charlie Gosling, Charlie Smith, Felix Obholzer, Dave Willcox, Rupert Singfield and Hugh Reilly, with cox, Sam Shuker) took charge from the start and held off all challenges to win.

The next day's Nottingham Masters and Club Regatta made up a full weekend of racing where Abingdon RC and City had to settle for second in a number of the six-lane races.

There were three successes for Radley College crews at Putney Town Regatta.

Radley boys scooped both the J14 quad and octuple events, while their J15 squad won the novice coxed fours.

On the other side of the Atlantic, the prestigious Eastern Sprints finals were held on Lake Quinsigamond, Worcester, Massachusetts, with former Cherwell School pupil, Sholto Carnegie, and Radley old boys, Ollie Wynne-Griffiths and Charlie Elwes, in the winning Yale crew.

Another Radley old boy, Tom George, was in the second placed Princeton boat.

Following the European Championships, the Great Britain selectors have announced several crews will be unchanged, but there will be additional boats for the second World Cup Regatta at Lucerne, Switzerland, later this month.

The gold medal winning men’s four, with Constantine Louloudis (Oxford University), and lightweight pair, with Joel Cassells (Oxford Brookes), will race again, but now also against crews from outside Europe.

We must watch closely as the double scull, containing Olympic gold medallist Katherine Grainger, has been disbanded after a poor performance at Brandenburg.

Grainger and erstwhile partner, Vicky Thornley, will be trialled for the eight after Lucerne, putting at risk the seats of a number of Oxford rowers.

The men’s eight with Brookes and Oxford University alumni is also unchanged and will be looking to improve on the European bronze.

The silver medallist pair of Stewart Innes and Alan Sinclair will face additional competition from team-mates, Nathan Reilly O’Donnell and Brookes’ Matthew Tarrant, winners at the first World Cup in Varese, Italy.

The Wallingford combination of Ellie Piggot and Brianna Stubbs is given an opportunity in the lightweight double as the current number one crew is rested.

The Lightweight four races again, with Brookes' Peter Chambers, while his brother Richard makes his first appearance of 2016 in the lightweight double.
