THE Oxford Mail Youth League and Girls League will recognise the work of Steve Wheeler this weekend.

The popular photographer, who died in the early hours of Tuesday morning at his Eynsham home, had been on the touchline every weekend for the past two decades.

Both leagues were keen to mark his contribution, and will hold a minute’s applause before every match.

Paul Lyon, speaking on behalf of the Youth League, said: “I worked with Steve for more than 20 years.

“He would be out every Sunday, no matter what the weather, and took great team and action shots.

“He was a big character with a big camera and will be very difficult to replace.”

Chris Webb, chairman of the Girls League, echoed those thoughts.

“Everyone associated with the league was deeply saddened to learn of Steve’s untimely passing,” he said.

“Steve has been a friend to the league for many years and covered fixtures across the county as well as being a permanent fixture at our annual finals day.

“Personally, Steve’s enthusiasm has been an inspiration to me to get more involved in sports action photography.

“He will be sorely missed.”

Tributes to the 62-year-old from sports clubs, individuals and friends poured in from all over the world after news of his death.

“I knew Steve for many years before Barbara and I emigrated to Australia,” said Vince Baskerville.

“Our love of rugby brought us together at club and county level.

“We will treasure his memory and the number of sports photos taken by him that we have here in Victoria.”
