DESPITE winning the away second leg 4-2, Vikings went down 7-5 on aggregate to Division 1 side Gladiators A in Group B of the Oxford & District League’s Knock-out Cup, writes PETE EWINS.

Trailing 5-1 from the first leg, the Division 2 underdogs pulled back a leg when Kevin Giles won the first leg of the night against the break.

However, Bob Pincombe (5,110) and Keith Gardner (5,490) replied for Gladiators, meaning they could not be beaten.

The surge came too late for Vikings.

Sean Stratford won his singles before the visitors took both pairs through Giles and Vinnie Brown, and Stratford and Melvyn Johnson.

Meanwhile, Berinsfield Club won 4-2 in their rearranged match away to Headington Conservative Club, thanks to singles wins by Larry Richens, Phil McFarland, and John Boal.
