OXFORD Hawks went three points clear in South League Premier Division 1 with a 3-1 win in their top-of-the table match away to London Edwardians.

The hosts started at a frenetic pace and missed two gilt-edged chances early on.

Hawks soon made them pay, when Will Heywood gave them a 14th-minute lead following excellent work from Tom Godding.

It was an evenly-contested affair, before the visitors doubled their lead, Matt Wood finishing off an excellent counter-attack.

Edwardians converted a penalty corner in the dying seconds of the first half.

Hawks’ defence stayed strong after the break, when there was a flurry of cards including a yellow for the home keeper.

The visitors’ first penalty corner after the break led to a second goal, which was initially saved, but the ball fell invitingly back to Jack Biggs, who made it 3-1 and Hawks had no problems hanging on to their lead.

Oxford paid the price for numerous missed chances as they drew 2-2 at home to Amersham & Chalfont in Regional Division 1.

Leading at half-time through James Rayward’s opener, the hosts eased off in the icy conditions and allowed Amersham to score two quick breakaway goals.

A Matt James deflection saved their blushes with five minutes left and Oxford nearly stole the points with an overtime short corner effort going narrowly wide.

Witney stayed a point clear at the top of Regional Division 2 with a 2-0 victory at home to fourth-placed Sonning.

After a goalless first half, Rob Manson put the hosts ahead.

But they had to resist some strong Sonning pressure, before Rory Heaslip made it 2-0.

WITNEY ended London Wayfarers’ unbeaten record with a stunning 2-0 home victory in Division 2 of the Ladies’ South Clubs League.

In heavy rain, Witney attacked down both wings and took the lead when Katie Gatt flicked the ball home from a short corner.

After the break, Wayfarers won a series of short corners, but the hosts dug deep to soak up the pressure.

Their industry was rewarded when a superb play from Bev Campion and Ellie Kearney set up Sunny Wallis, who weaved her way past several defenders to seal the victory, which keeps them third in the table.

Witney next face local rivals Banbury on Saturday.

Oxford stormed to a 5-0 victory away to Hampstead & Westminster 3rd in Division 3A.

Floor Timmer’s goal and some fine saves from keeper Emma Page helped Oxford to lead 1-0 at half-time.

The hosts dominated the second half, adding further scores from Kim Warman (2), Beth Williamson and Olivia Strickland.
