OXFORD Hawks’ nervy progress towards the South League Premier Division 1 title continued when they suffered a 4-3 defeat at home to Bromley & Beckenham.

This defeat followed their 6-3 hammering by London Wayfarers the previous week.

But despite these setbacks, Hawks are still in charge of their own destiny.

One victory from their final two games – a rearranged home fixture against Winchester tomorrow night and trip to Horsham next Saturday – should clinch the title and promotion to the National League.

In testing conditions, Bromley took the lead from a short corner, but Ryan Hammond equalised in the 22nd

minute.

With the visitors keeper in fine form, Hawks could not add to their score in the first half and conceded a reverse-stick strike just before the interval.

Bromley made it 3-1 from a short-corner conversion that should have been saved.

Jack Biggs pulled a goal back from another short corner as Hawks appeared to be getting the upper hand.

However, the visitors restored their two-goal cushion by converting a penalty flick.

Andy Watts pulled one back with four minutes left on the clock, but time was against Hawks and they could not find an equaliser.

Their disappointment at losing their second successive game, was alleviated to some extent when word filtered through that fellow title-contenders London Edwardians had lost at home.

Oxford eased to a 3-1 victory at home to Oxford Hawks 2nd in Regional 1.

The hosts went ahead through a Matt Janes short corner

Hawks equalised through a scrambled goal finished off by Simon Robinson.

But a second-half screamer from Arron Leadbeater and a rebound from James Rayward sealed Oxford’s deserved win.

Witney kept their Regional 2 title hopes alive with a crucial 2-1 victory away to Newbury & Thatcham.

The visitors took the lead midway through the first half. Rory Heaslip’s drag-flick was saved but Tim Chilvers knocked the rebound to Liam Frost, who rolled the ball in from a yard.

Ben Moss made it 2-0 before the break, following a brilliant one-two with Jacob Deacon.

Newbury pulled a goal back late in the second half from a controversial short corner, but the visitors survived another scare to hold on for victory
