DIDCOT Town’s hopes of promotion from the Evo-Stik South League West Division ended when they lost 2-0 at Wimborne in their play-off semi-final.

The Railwaymen had competed the league double over the Dorset side this season, but proved no match for their hosts especially in the first half.

Fielding an unchanged side from Saturday’s win against Paulton Rovers, Didcot were on the back foot from the start as Wimborne forced two early corners.

The hosts went ahead in the 21st minute when Billy Maybury’s free-kick deflected off the defensive wall to the unmarked Tobias Homes, who made no mistake from close range.

Four minutes later it was 2-0, as Didcot defender Cameron McNeill was caught in possession by Holmes, who crossed for Jack Lovell to score.

The visitors had to wait 35 minutes for their first chance, but McNeill headed just over.

Wimborne stayed in charge at the start of the second half, and only a great saves by the Railwaymen’s keeper Leigh Bedwell kept out Holmes.

Felipe Barcelos and sub Sam Barder tested home keeper Gerard Benfield, but Didcot never looked like getting back into the game.

When Barcelos missed a late chance, Didcot knew their hopes had gone.
