OXFORD United have held contract discussions with Jem Karacan, manager Karl Robinson has revealed.

The 29-year-old is a free agent after leaving Bolton Wanderers earlier this summer.

Karacan, a former Turkey Under 21 international, helped the Trotters win automatic promotion from Sky Bet League One in 2017 and started 14 games in the Championship last season.

Contact has been made and the ball is in his court, according to Robinson.

He said: "We’ve spoken to him and he has a decision to make if this is the football club that he wants.

"He was captain at Bolton at the start of last season, he’s played for Galatasaray, he’s captained Reading.

"He’s a very high-energy, very aggressive midfield player.

"We’re meeting another midfield player today as well, we need two we think.

"The other one we want to bring in is over six foot and is a powerhouse, so I think there’s a perfect blend in that."

Robinson, who signed Jamie Mackie yesterday, is aware of interest from other clubs in Karacan.

He said: "Yes, but not as much as we had for Jamie.

"He has a decision to make: (does he want to) wear our shirt with pride and dedicate a small part of your life to be successful for us?

"It’s the same message to all the players we’re trying to bring in."
