Wilder acts on time travel

Chris Wilder is hoping to minimise the risk of niggling injuries – by making all Oxford United players live closer to the club.

Although the majority of the U’s squad live within an hour of the Kassam Stadium, a few – and some key players – live further afield.

And United’s boss says that it is a situation he is keen to discuss with chairman Kelvin Thomas.

“We do have a few travellers in our squad which, to be honest, isn’t ideal,” Wilder said.

“Ideally I would like the players to all live as close to the ground as possible.

“I appreciate people have families and some, for what-ever reason, cannot be on the doorstep. But I don’t think it helps having to sit in a car for a couple of hours, each way, each day.”

Wilder says that with the size of the U’s squad, he is desperate to ensure that no-one misses any games for an avoidable reason.

And although he admits the travelling may be seen as a small issue, United’s boss will minimise any risk.

The distance some players have to travel was one of the reasons Wilder decided against training on Christmas Day.

“Sitting in a car for a length of time doesn’t help your posture or back,” he said.

“I felt with the amount of games we had over Christmas, it was the sensible decision not to make players drive in on Christmas Day for a few hours, and possible niggle their back or whatever.

“We need everybody as fit as possible and don’t want to take any risks if we can help it.

“If it helps a player to avoid an unnecessary injury, it will be of benefit to Oxford United.”

Former United boss Brian Talbot imposed a ‘one-hour driving limit’ on the U’s squad, but there are really only three players who are on the road for longer than this – Billy Turley, Barry Quinn and Adam Murray.

Turley and Quinn travel in together, with Quinn living in Coventry and Turley in Stratford.

Murray’s home is in Derby, a two-hour drive, but he frequently stays over in the week to avoid too much travelling.

The rest of the squad are closer to the club, with players coming from Northampton, Chippenham, Reading and Aylesbury, as well as Oxford’s surrounding towns and villages.

OXFORD United’s Blue Square Premier game at Eastbourne Borough, which was postponed last Saturday due to a frozen pitch, has been rearranged for Tuesday, March 3 (7.45pm).

What a sensible point of view and far from a small issue. I'm warming to this guy by the minute. What a change from the meaningless drivel that poured from Darren's lips.

At last a manager who is prepared to go back to basics. For a club like Oxford it is in my opinion a pre requisite that a player/manager should live within Oxfordhire if they want to be employed by the club. The fact that clubs like Oxford depend on local support and community involvement to be successful, just proves that players who live in other counties and have to travel miles to get to the ground is not the best way forward for success. Good Luck Mr Wilder, I do feel we have a winner in charge of our team.

Said all along in my posts that I felt this issue didn't help our poor away form, glad Wilder feels the same way, again a Quote that says Wilder has knowledge and a modicome of intelligence that was beyond Patterson, nicer to see that the fans who doubted and some who were against in very strong quotes against Chris Wilder when he got the job are beginning to come round and get behind the Manager and Club again, Keep up the repair and re-build Chris, We are Oxford we will rise again

Yes it makes sense - although when players think they might not be here that long - short-term contracts, endless supply of loan deals - not so obvious how this can be enforced.
And I doubt that the club has digs it can offer to players like in previous times.

I agree with it in priniciple but it will be interesting to see how the players on one year deals will manage this. I wouldnt be keen on selling my house and moving my family at the moment with house prices the way they are.

Interesting to note that even in the premier league players do live a long way from their clubs. I know Steve Sidwell and Reo-coker live in Berkshire for example

there are to many idiots in here that thought comments against players who travel for training & who have no ''feeling'' or knowledge of this area & the feelings of our fans did'nt matter! now perhaps those fans with that tunnel vision mentality will begin to realise that the club & its support go hand in hand with the players too! good luck CW & well done for bringing that ''comunity'' feeling back to our club that has been sadly missing for far to many years now..

Could the players on short deals not stay at the hotel?

CW is coming across as a new broom speaking common sense, lets hope we have a manager that the club deserves. Hopefully, although its only a trophy game on saturday, the fans will turn out in numbers and give Chris and the new players a good boost. Lets hope the weather gets a bit warmer and the next three home games will attract some good crowds.

I think Wilder is talking alot of sense however I think he has contradicted himself by signing the 2 young lads on loan who I presume live in Yorkshire. Surely they won't up sticks for a month? Granted they are only on loan but they must have a 3 hour each drive which isn't doing them any good.
