D-Day for United

OXFORD United are fighting a new crisis today, when they bid to overturn an 11-point deduction.

The club have been charged by the Football Conference for failing to register a player correctly – Eddie Hutchinson – and as a result, are set to lose all the points they picked up when the midfielder played.

United are appealing against the decision, and their case will be heard in Birmingham today.

However, Mansfield Town fell foul of the same rule at the start of the season and were docked points, so it seems likely United will be punished equally.

Crawley Town face a similar charge, but have accepted their wrong-doing.

The U’s are understood to be furious that the error was not picked up earlier by Conference chiefs, but ultimately they will have to hold their hands up to the serious administrative mistake.

Secretary Mick Brown is the man responsible for the registration of players, and his position must now be under threat.

United officials are putting forward a case that Hutchinson’s registration form WAS sent to the Conference offices, and that the mistake was at their end, not United’s.

However, it is the responsibility of the club to ensure a player’s form has been both received and accepted and this appears to be the club’s big downfall – no confirmation call was ever made.

Hutchinson – who is in no way to blame for the error – was stunned when the Oxford Mail broke the news to him that he was the player in question, but says that the league are at fault, not the club.

“I remember being called into Mick Brown’s office and signing the form so it has to be an error from the league,” he said.

“There were people there who witnessed it, so I and the club have done what we had to do, and I just hope that now the league carry the can for the mistake.”

interesting case this, as surely brown who works for the league and the club involved so if Oxford were to lose which is a real possibility they could have a case for conflict of interest depending on Browns evidence who is looking like a rite muppet atm! If i was Oxford I would take this to the Sports Courts (West Ham Tevez case, Bosman case etc forget the name) Could cost the existence of the club, surely the league as should a neglect of duties as well so and a very different case to the Mansfield case, a 11 point reduction would be very harsh!

This is cynical of me I know, but could it just be that the reason that this has taken so long for action to be brought by the Conference against Oxford is that the clubs whom Oxford played during this time have received a financial boost as a result of increased gates caused by Oxford United fans attending matches against their clubs.
HEAVENS FORGIVEME FOR SUGGESTING SUCH A THING!
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could it just be that nobody would have been daft enough to give up league management job if they knew they were to be in a relegation dogfight to avoid a division where average crowds are around 650-700, some pigeons and a dog?

actually an interesting point on crowds as if oxford go bust which they will if they go down, the league in general will suffer due the money oxford bring into it with they big crowds. so could actually be in the leagues interest to not punish oxford.

Or they could punish us enough to make sure we don't go up or down.

I don't think Mick Brown is to blame, he has been with the club since most of you were todlers and i'm certain he has put more time and effort than we can imagine.
The club won't take too bad of a hit, it will only push the team harder to get back up the table!
The club would't know what hit them if Mick was sacked!

The league should realise that they have customers - those who support the clubs and have nothing to do with the admin side of things... But to be honest, I have little faith in the Conference leagues administrators...

Punishing innocent customers...

What would happen if this mistake happened in January, and the hearing not occurred until after the play-offs - that Oxford had won? If the Conference "punishes" Oxford, then it also must be "punished".
