CRICKET: Morgan shines as Rowant go through

Aston Rowant’s first foray into the national rounds ended with a five-wicket win in Somerset yesterday.

Set a modest total of 154-9 by hosts Ashcott & Shapwick, Rowant batted sensibly, before passing their total with an over to go, after a fine all-round display from Tim Morgan.

Although the were always ahead of the clock, some late wickets gave them minor concern, before Thad Cooper hit the winning runs to set up a clash away to Glamorgan & Gwent champions, Miskin Manor, near Cardiff, in the next round on July 12.

Having won the toss, Ashcott opted to bat first, but were soon under pressure as Karl Penhale and Ryan Dutton took early wickets.

A fourth-wicket stand of 55 brought up the century, only for Paul Humphreys, who has enjoyed success in this competition before with Shipton-under-Wychwood, to make two quick breakthroughs.

Morgan then ripped through the tail, returning 4-39 from seven overs.

In reply, Rowant got off to a superb start.

Openers Morgan and Alex Jewell shared an opening partnership of 80 – aided by some generous bowling.

On three separate occasions the hosts conceded five wides as Rowant took command.

Morgan eventually fell for a hard-fought 19, and Jewell for 39.

No 3 Chris Watling upped the run-rate, but wickets then started to fall.

Penhale and Chris Eaton chipped in, but despite Dave Rudge’s 3-26, Rowant got home, thanks to Cooper’s boundary.

I'll get this weeks wagon on the road. Well done Rowant. But of more importance, Hyron Shallow knocked off 155 not out in their winning run chase of 220 odd for 7. If they get promoted, could they cope in Div 2 without him. Hmmmmm, I'd suggest not

Indeed, well done Dinton as well. Nice tight game. We had a nice weekend this week with all three teams winning, a first this season. Loved it

Well done Phil. Dinton played well yesterday, unlike saturday when they got hammered by horspath! Did you come and watch yesterday Phil?

You must be joking Power. My missus would've put me in hospital. Cricket 2 days in a row is only for special occasions like when she has something better to do.
Kind of apt this. many-hurt

Fair enough, got to keep them happy i suppose!! Was a good game, Dinton didnt get enough runs but the bowling and fielding were spot on.

..and he was out first ball plumb LBW not to mention the 3 dropped catches! To be fair to Twyford they allegedly had 5 first team players missing (all batters I think) but did seem to rely on Mr Shallow a fair bit.

Some people have all the luck, I haven't been dropped 3 times in the last 5 years

Morning All,

Sorry for being a bit dim but is this the same Hyron Shallow who plays for St Kitts & Nevis? (or some other caribbean island)

Morning Beefy, one and the same. Used to smash it around in the OCA Div 1 for Tetsworth before upgrading to the Cherwell for this season.

well that's hardly fair is it!! What fun bowling in Div 3 next year if Twyford stay and Brickhill go up!!

Phil J says...

The likelihood is that Twyford will go up providing he keeps up his current performances. By my reckoning he has scored 550 out of Twyfords 1250 or so runs so far this year.
Hasnain Raza's record might be under threat again

He was at Kiddy not so long ago. Really good player by all accounts. The problem with what has happened with Brickhill and Twyford is that they are put into Divs they are too good for, and this leaves all the teams in the middle divs treading water for a few years whilst these find their level. Same will happen with East Oxford.

he opened the bowling the batting and kept wicket between his two spells, safraz is good and they had a couple of other good players.

infact they are all decent guys also.

more so with twyford they will power throught the leagues but shallow will get a better offer eventually and surely they will drift back down the leagues.

Didn't Taq also play for Bicester & north a while back?

it will be interesting next year when you are not allowed overseas or paid players how these teams will get on.
They could fall as quick as they rose!

Taq has been around for a few years, he switch hit Malik for 6 last night!! East Oxford boys are a good bunch of lads, Taq and Sarfraz looked like they have lost a bit of pace though.

Great security words, one or 2 missing though - wife-shut
