Oxford United set for windfall

Oxford United could be set for a huge windfall if their former midfielder Dean Whitehead completes a move from Premier League Sunderland to championship side Ipswich Town.

According to reports, Whitehead, 27, and teammate Darryl Murphy are on the verge of sealing a move to Ipswich who are now managed by former Black Cats boss Roy Keane, for a combined fee of £5m.

When the U’s sold Whitehead to Sunderland in 2004 for a fee of around £150,00 they inserted a 25 per cent sell-on clause, meaning that, depending on the valuation of Whitehead, the U’s could benefit to the tune of more than £600,000.

Would that cover lost revenue from Setanta for the season?

Anyone know?

More than cover Setanta losses, which were valued at £80K - £100K.
I trust our current Directors to use any windfall wisely

News from my mate on Wearside is that it could be Murphy and Carlos Edwards heading for Ipswich!!!!!

The " Murphy and Carlos Edwards" names appear to be correct, no mention in Sunderland of Whitehead going anywhere anytime soon. I know we are in line for cash should he go but do think that it smacks of desperation that every now and then this story comes up and when , like i just have, you trawl theu the clubs webites, local newspapoers websites and everything that is associated with the player, those clubs and the relevant towns press nothing agrees with the rumours. Tho on a positive note if he is sold on at a good fee it will be a bumper pay out day for OUFC and we all would like to see that!

So Mr Wickson, there's "no mention in Sunderland of Whitehead going anywhere" is there?. Well, perhaps you ought to take a look at the Sunderland Echo. It's football reporter writes that he's been told he can leave and that Keane's been given permission to talk to him. Ok, so the deal's not done yet, but this hardly "smacks of desperation". The story looks to have some genuine foundations, so let's cross our fingers that the transfer happens and we cash in.

who'd have thunk when dean whitehead was at oxford that he would one day go on to become Roy Keane's chosen captain and central midfield numero uno.

Who'd Have 'thunk' indeed, Ben? Just think - if (sorry-WHEN) we get to Div.2, what are current players gonna be worth?

I've read numerous comments that we may not even be entitled to a sell-on fee anymore :)

And I heard Chris Wilder this morning say on Radio Oxford that it was a good bit of business for OUFC to include the sell on clause, so I think you can rest assured that OUFC WILL get some cash should Whitehead be sold.

I am so excited about this news. Thought a little while ago when Keen was doing good that he and Whitehead would'nt leave forever... but now it seems really on the cards. Could be the kind ofLotto win all our hard work and bad fortune deserves.

On the swings and round-abouts that is football we'd probably come out just ahead if you ballance up a £600k windfall against Brian Lee and his personal vendetta against our club last season.

Still this is no time for sour grapes. More like time to pop some corks.

What did you expect him to say? Of course it was good business.

What it/he doesn't say is if we've already been paid out, does it!

So perhaps I am not assured with all 'the' assumptions that we are still entitled to a cut.

Well, we haven't been paid out, because Whitehead hasn't been sold....
But if he IS sold, I reckon Chris Wilder knows enough about the transfer market, and this deal in particular to know that we WOULD be paid.

Well thats you assuming again isn't it.

Just because he hasn't been sold doesn't mean a deal over the fee has taken place, may I refer you to a similar situation at Cambridge United, clever cloggs.

Whitehead's wages could be a stumbling point- He's on a reported £25,000 per week at Sunderland and would be expected to take a substantial cut in that should he go to the Witches.
Likewise Murphy is on slightly less but would also have to take a substantial cut in wages.
Having said that neither appear to be in Steve Bruce's plans for the future of Sunderland and both players have worked under Keane so fingers crossed that it all goes through. I still think £600,000 is optimistic and it is muh more likely to be around £350,000 or less that will be received!

Zimmer says...
8:27pm Sat 11 Jul 09

It now appears that the Murphy part of the deal will be an agreed fee of £3m for that player.
The Whitehead part is more complicated as I hinted above and a stumbling block could be Whitehead's wages currently £25,000 a week at Sundeland, which Ipswich are unlikely to match. If Whitehead is part of the deal the combined fee would be £5m which makes Whitehead's fee £2m of which 25% is £500,000!

Todays news is that Murphy is going to Hull.

This means twwo things 1) Keane may have more money to spend on Whithead - particularly wages 2) He may have to focus more on bringing in additional strike force.

It's still in the ballance but my thoguht would be after getting hids fingers burnt by Hull he might move quickly to land Whitehead. Fingers crossed.
