Oxford United boss Wilder slams his players after defeat

Oxford United boss Chris Wilder described his players as “really arrogant and big-time” as they crashed to a shock 2-1 home defeat against Hayes & Yeading last night.

It was one of the worst performances from a United team since he took charge, and they lost top spot in the Blue Square Premier as Stevenage beat Barrow 4-0 to go two points clear at the summit.

Oxford have a game in hand, which comes on Saturday when Stevenage don’t play.

It was two former United players who hurt them last night. Steve Basham scored both Hayes goals, while Yemi Odubade smashed a hat-trick for Stevenage.

Wilder gave his team a rollicking after what was only their second home defeat of the season, with the home dressing room door locked for an hour.

When he emerged, he admitted responsibility himself for the setback, and said: “We were awful, there’s no dressing it up. I’d not seen it coming, to be fair.

“I didn’t think we deserved to win the game at all.

“We’d prepared just the same, the coaching staff had reminded them of the pitfalls of looking at league tables and the opposition and recent results.

“I thought we were really arrogant and it was a really big-time performance from the players, as if they didn’t want to get their hands dirty, and do the hard parts of the game.

“I take responsibility. It’s my team, I had the ability to change it around, but it was a real poor night for us, possibly the poorest night I’ve had since I've been in charge of the club.”

Basham, who played just under 200 games for Oxford United in a five-year spell, did not celebrate his goals.

He said afterwards: “You have got to be professional and do your job, but I hope Oxford bounce back.

“I didn’t celebrate the goals out of respect for my old club. There was no need to rub it in.

“It was a great night for me and for Hayes. We have got some good players in our team.

“Garry Haylock (Hayes manager) deserves some credit. He made some changes after Saturday – we lost 3-2 against Luton – and it worked well.”

Oxford have to visit Hayes & Yeading in a few week’s time for the return match and Basham added: “That’s a huge game for the club.”

l UNITED’s Sam Deering, 19, has signed a new two-year contract.

We sign far too many players and never have a settled side, we are trying to buy success and it doesn't work.

i woke up this morning & immediatly started to think back on the 44 years iv followed OUFC & tried to think back on some of the most dreadful performances iv seen in that time!
sure there have been a ''few'' & especially in the 'asprey' years, & also a fair few in the not to distant past! but last night, well! that ranks in my top 10 & that really is saying summat!
im not to much of a person to criticise normally but that dross was shameful & unforgiveable to say the least! we all know the conditions & the pitch were not the greatest but how come H&Y adapted so well & we did'nt? they had just about enough fans to fill a taxi & we had 5000 hardy souls & we got that garbage! CW says 'we were arrogant & big time'...what rubbish! we seem to be imploding & its because of rank bad tactics! we can all see CW's tactics are wrong & its showing, our defence is shambolic & im not gonna say why cos we all know why! chopping & changing a team in the 'run in' to the most important season in many many years is down to one person & one person only! be honest with the fans chris & dont shift all the blame to the players, you pick the teams & you sign the players!.....im hearing many fans asking the same question! chop n change-chop n change! why?....i dont think you know chris & that hurts me to say that cos iv stood by you all season! but ''we'' the paying customer are entitled to some honesty from you chris before fans start to question ''does he know what he's doing''....at the moment i & many fans are begining to wonder....

I thought that the performance given by Oxford last night was awful.

Players standing off the ball, missed passes galore and poor decision making.

CW is blaming himself but the players need to step up and take responsibilities for their actions.

I hope that this is the wake up call that we haven't won yet and there is work to be done to make sure we get out of this league.

2-1 defeat at home to a part time side with 10 men. Enough said...

Shame on our team & management. What a dour performance. We did not show H& Y the respect they deserved!!!!
What a good professional Steve Basham is, our team could & should learn frm players like him.
All these signings & nothing to show for them. CW brings in these palyers & picks the team. He should be able to motivate his team into playing a good game & score some goals. That was a shambles last night!!!
The team does not deserve the fantastic supporters they have. They must hold their heads in shame.
It will be very intersting to see how they react on Saturday. Why do nearly all the players that leave our club do so well elsewhere. Someting we are not able to do here?
Saturday awaits.

Based on CW's comments - exactly who is he blaming for last night's shambles??? He says "I take responsibility. It’s my team, I had the ability to change it around.." and then says the players were"... really arrogant and it was a really big-time performance"

In the cold light of the morning after I have been reflecting on the poor performances I have seen this season. I think that at the start of games we allow the oppo to settle too much and have too much of the ball rather than getting stuck in from the start. Those masochists with good memories will remember Forest Green 0-0 when they played the better football throughout after a good start. Get tackles in from the start. Get them not us under pressure. Get behind the team! Come on you yellows!!!!!

Thinking more midfield. Thought that was what we brought Hargreaves back for? Hopefully Chalmers can also do it for us.... Thought The Beast did ok - unlucky with a looping header on goal - until he decided he could play football. Hope he dosn't start seeing himself as another Lucio!!!!

It's clear that despite the multitude of players CW has signed, whatever team he has put out this year, none has matched the passion and spirit that the team had in the final three months of last year. I'm still lost for words at what we witnessed last night. It's enough to make Richard from Ellesmere Port come out of self imposed exile.

Your a fickle bunch. You have a go at other people for moaning and critiscising Wilder and then after 1 loss you then have a go.

You said to people like Richard Wickson and myself and others that we were not supporters for CONSTRUCTIVE CRITISCISM and now your all going on and on about how bad we are after just 1 loss! This has been coming for a long while!

Even though we were served up a complete load of rubbish Tuesday, on the whole the fans stayed loyal to the team and for those who did well done.
I agree the team has been changed around far to much, for reasons only CW knows and and in fairness injuries.
I believe when we get the likes of Murray, Beano and alfie back we will then show we have a half decent team.
As some of the the other posts have said we need to get at the opposition earlier and keep up the pressure for longer periods, we showed against The real dons how to do just that, so come on you players stop prancing about as if you have already won some thing and prove you have what it takes to be winners and not wasters.

So - after Tuesday’s embarrassment, are we supposed to say “Oh, it’s OK, these things happen, we’re still going to win this league and we don’t need to sort it out?” Of course not!!
Fact: I have supported CW completely after some poor displays this season –and several shockers e.g. Barrow, Kidderminster, Tamworth.
Fact: On Tuesday, we lost at home to a bunch of part timers who had ten men for virtually half the match.
As I have said before, Richard moaned like an old fishwife even when we were playing well and winning. The general consensus was that it was unhelpful. I stand by that. Having a moan after a truly unacceptable display like Tuesday’s is fully justified – read the other 20 odd posts. And, as Hugh Curran has already said, rant over, let’s move on to Saturday and be positive.
