Jevons in Macclesfield's danger man

Morecambe's best-known player, and probably their main danger man, is strikr Phil Jevons.

The 5ft 10 in forward (pictured) was a product of the Everton Academy and scored 55 goals in 91 youth team games, winning the FA Youth Cup in 1998.

He played eight times in the Premier League for Everton and was a contemporary of fellow youth-team squad members Francis Jeffers and Danny Cadamarteri.

But whereas Jeffers stayed on and made an impact at Goodison Park, Jevons was transfer-listed and left the club at the end of the 2000-2001 season.

He was sold to Grimsby Town for £250,000 and became a big hit at Blundell Park, scoring a stunning long-range goal in extra time of a 2-1 League Cup win over Liverpool at Anfield.

He scored 18 goals in 63 appearances for the Mariners, before moving to Yeovil, where he hit a further 42 goals in 84 games.

Loaned to Morecambe from Huddersfield in 2009, Jevons struck 18 goals for the Shrimps.

So Morecambe fans were understandably delighted when manager Sammy McIlroy signed him in the summer on a permanent two-year deal.
