Deering drops big hint to Wilder

SAM Deering gave boss Chris Wilder a nudge by scoring as Oxford United Reserves recorded an excellent 2-0 victory at Ipswich yesterday.

The winger, who incurred the wrath of Wilder after turning up late for the U’s opening totesport.com Football Combination against Southend last month and less than a week later did the same for the npower League Two clash at Wycombe, curled in a free-kick to give the U’s a first-half lead.

Deering then turned provider, heading a Mitchell Cole cross back across goal for Richie Baker to fire home to make it 2-0.

And for United, it banished the memories of a 9-0 drubbing at the hands of Ipswich the last time the U’s sent a reserve side there.

Coach Mickey Lewis was delighted at the result, and the manner of United’s performance.

“This was an excellent result,” he told United’s website. “On the way, I was reminded that we lost 9-0 the last time we played here, so this shows the huge strides we are making as a club.

“All of the pros showed a great attitude and we played very well for 90 minutes.

“Ipswich had a decent side out, but I thought we deserved the win and the lads should take great heart from the performance.”

United fielded a strong side against Roy Keane’s outfit, with Simon Eastwood in goal behind a back four of Leigh Franks, Sam Parish, Mark Creighton and Stevie Kinniburgh.

Alfie Potter and Cole played as wingers, with Baker and Dannie Bulman in central midfield.

Deering played just off striker Jack Midson up front.

And after Deering put United ahead, Creighton came inches away from doubling the lead when his volley was well-saved.

At the other end, Eastwood was called into action to preserve the lead.

Baker doubled the lead, firing home from 15 yards after a good move.

Although United were under pressure after the break, they stood firm to record their first victory of the season.

United reserves host Stevenage next Wednesday at Didcot Town’s ground (7pm).

Oxford Utd: Eastwood, Franks, Parish, Creighton, Kinniburgh, Potter, Bulman, Baker, Cole (Woodley 75), Deering, Midson. Subs not used: Silver, West, Owen, McDonagh.

Looks like young Sam has turned the corner, and about time!!
He has undoubted ability despite being vertically challenged, his biggest obstacle though was attitude and scant regard for time keeping, seems he's now pulled up his proverbial and is working hard. Good for you Sam.
