Alfie Potter expressed his relief after breaking his goal-scoring drought with a cracking equaliser in Oxford United’s 1-1 draw at Burton Albion.
The individual effort capped a superb second-half display yesterday, and was his first goal since September 10, which came in the 2-2 draw against the Brewers at Oxford.
And the point lifted the U’s back into the npower League Two play-off positions after Saturday’s results had seen Chris Wilder’s side slip to eighth.
“It's been coming for a while, I’ve been missing a few chances,” said Potter.
“I could have had a couple today, but I’m glad to get one and hopefully, it’s the first of many.
“Mickey Lewis (assistant manager) was saying I should have gone down, but I didn’t feel a touch, so when I got through I just put my foot through it and it’s gone in.
“I really enjoy picking the ball up between midfield and the strikers and running at people.
“It was a relief when it went in, it was nice to get a goal.
“I had a chance before that the keeper saved, so I knew I had to score.
“It was great to score in front of our fans – it’s always nice to get your name sung.”
Minutes after Potter levelled, he had the chance to score the winner, only to scuff his shot.
He saidd: “I tried to catch it on the half-volley and it’s just lifted up a bit.
“I need to start taking more of my chances. It is frustrating – I’d not scored since that goal in the home game against Burton, I couldn’t let it get to me, so I’m glad to get that one today.”
Potter added: “First half, we couldn’t get to grips with them because they are a good passing side.
“The manager made a few tactical changes and I thought we matched them in the second half.
“We could have easily won the game.”
