Mickey Lewis heaped praise on winger Alfie Potter after he scored a second-half cracker in Oxford United’s 1-1 draw at Burton Albion yesterday.
Potter’s goal – his first since September – came on 59 minutes when he weaved past a number of Burton defenders before firing in a right-foot shot into the far corner.
“It was a terrific goal,” said United’s assistant manager.
“I think Alfie is far too honest because he stays on his feet when a lot of players would go down.
“He was getting tackled and fouled and pushed. And he got the reward for that with a fantastic goal. If it was in the Premier League or La Liga we’d all be raving about it.
“It was a magnificent goal. His overall play this season has been very good, but Alfie knows himself that he should perhaps have had a few more goals.
“And perhaps that lack of confidence has showed in the last few games.
“Second half, he has come out and scored a wonderful goal and hopefully he can kick on from that.”
Meanwhile, Lewis said he was pleased with the way the side performed and felt a draw was a fair result.
He added: “The good thing about our lads is that they’re disappointed not to get a win.
“It shows a lot about their mentality. We all know we should have won the last two home games (against Crewe and Hereford) because we played well enough and created a lot of chances.
“They (Burton) have had a couple of not so good results recently, but it was never going to stay like that.”
Lewis felt that the change at half-time, with Oli Johnson replacing Asa Hall in midfield had done the trick.
“Second half, the manager’s made a great change. We had Oli, Alfie, Beano (James Constable) and Jon-Paul (Pittman) – that’s four attacking players,” he added.
“We have got a point and it could have been three.”
