Potter news 'hard to take' - Wilder

Alfie Potter Alfie Potter

OXFORD United boss Chris Wilder admitted the news that Alfie Potter will miss the rest of the season is hard to take.

The winger went over on his ankle in training late on Friday, and United’s worst fears were realised over the weekend when it was confirmed there was a break that needs an operation.

Coming 48 hours after it was revealed that striker Tom Craddock would be out for at least another month with a troublesome hamstring injury, it has been a real double whammy for the U’s.

Wilder said that as soon as Potter fell badly in training, everyone knew the injury was serious.

“It’s really disappointing news,” United’s boss said. “It was at the back end of training and Alfie went for a ball, caught it on his chest and fell awkwardly.

“Everybody instantly knew he was in a lot of pain and was in a bad place.

“He had an x-ray Friday and a scan on Saturday morning and he has displaced a bone in his ankle and he will need an operation – that’s him out for the season.”

While you never want to lose any key players through injury, to have two ruled out so soon after each other, Wilder says, is particularly frustrating.

“We are not one of the biggest squads in terms of numbers, but to lose two players of that quality will hit you hard,” he said.

“Tommy has had a really frustrating time this season and to take what I think is 20 goals out of your team is a big hit.

“And with Alfie’s unfortunate injury as well, it’s difficult to take.”

With a small squad of players, we will struggle without a good winger. He seemed to be getting to the top of his game.

Not great news. Lets hope the other forwards we brought in can help fill his boots. Although is doesn't score many we frustrates opponents.

You have to feel for Alfie, most unfortunate, especially after getting a goal, I was hoping he would kick on from that and get many more. He has been one of the faster, players with extra creative ability. I just hope the other players find ways of adapting, to capitize on peneration, without becomming pedestrian. I fear we could now be looking at a draw against Swinetown rather than a win, hope I am wrong!

Are you a night watchman? You have to admit, it's pretty weird that you're up at 1am writing this stuff on the Oxford website.

methinks that le god is up for de canios job when he leaves as he has all the inside info he even knows that the players are bursting for revenge. just remember one thing regardless of league positions its a local derby and its possible for utd to do the double over stfc , and not possible for you.

Although it would be nice to win at your place I don't think we'll care too much when we get one of the automatic promotion spots.......... Current form suggests that promotion is a distinct possibility, although we still have a long way to go before that happens. As for the match at your place, I'll put my ticket money on a Swindon win, shame your Directors bottled it on the temporary stand and denied thousands of fans a trip up the A420. Onwards and upwards.

Hey,it never ceases to amaze me that theses folk, like LeGod who has to go to bed early, have so much time to waste reading these Oxford United columns! it shows how dull and what sad life they lead! Especially when they come here chirping from their haycarts making an out pouring of ill-informed pronouncements.

They are so confident of their misguided cause that thought they could buy Constable to get them off the hook. Dream on!

im surprised that le god is not saying that de canio is the obvious choice for the england vacancy, possibly part time aided by le god as his faithfull assistant. seriously though , the foreign invasion of the premier league means that there are currently only four english managers in the premier .so if we go for an englishman as i feel we must, its easy to see why the media clamour for rednapp as despite his less than squeaky clean image he does not appear to have any real competition for the job.
